He came from Toronto; she, from Seattle.
His parents started a radio station; hers were music teachers.
Both had music in their blood, instruments in their hands, and a mind to create.
The mountains led him to the west; a star led her to the north.
In Vancouver they met and schooled—studying music and life.
They found promise.
They found love.
In less than a year they put school on hold, got married, and lived.
With music and purpose guiding them, school called again and to Nashville they went.
He became an audio engineer; she became a songwriter; music stayed central and they continued to create.
Entering the Nashville music scene in 2009, Handsome and Gretyl released their debut EP, Hold On Tight Love, February 2011.
Handsome and Gretyl have created an earthy folk feel crossed with an imaginative jaunt of pop, a sweet and tangy piece of wild berry pie. This duo draws from real life, delivering optimistic though realistic lyrics, seasoned with the chill of snow, the sea breeze, and the hope of tomorrow’s sunrise.
Lovin'
Handsome and Gretyl Lyrics

I can't seem to forget what I'm feeling
Love and hate, two flags I'm swaying
All that I've found is
Loving is easy, loving is hard
Loving is easy, loving is hard
Are you brave enough?
Lay our troubles down just for a moment
Walk away from our reality
Stay a while no need to speak
We're thinking the same thing
Loving is easy, loving is hard
loving is easy, loving is hard
Are we brave enough
Loving is easy loving is hard
Loving is easy loving is hard
Are we gonna brave it out
Someone once told me
Love could never look that way
With nothing between it and hate
If we architect a meeting place
Would we still say
Loving is easy, loving is hard
Loving is easy
So when the going gets rough look for my love
The lyrics to Handsome and Gretyl's song "Lovin'" talk about the complexities of love. The singer wears their heart on their sleeve and can't forget what they're feeling. They're swayed between love and hate, two opposing emotions that are constantly vying for their attention. Despite all this, they've found that loving is both easy and hard. The chorus repeats this sentiment, asking if the listener is brave enough to navigate the ups and downs of love.
The second verse suggests an escape from reality, to "lay our troubles down just for a moment" and "stay a while no need to speak." The singer feels in sync with their partner, thinking the same thing. The chorus repeats again, asking if the listener is brave enough for the challenge of love.
The bridge explores the skepticism some people have towards love. The singer had been told that love could never look the way it does, as if there should always be something between love and hate. But the song suggests that love can be both easy and hard, and that a meeting place can be built between the two extremes. The song ends with a reassurance to look for the singer's love when things get tough.
Overall, "Lovin'" is a thoughtful exploration of the nuances of love. It acknowledges the difficulties of navigating a complex emotion, but ultimately suggests that it's worth it to be brave and try.
