A Fooler a Faker
Hank Thompson And His Brazos Valley Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're a fooler a faker a little heartbreaker
The slightest gal that I've ever known
Abuser a chooser but now you're the loser
Cause the heart that you broken was your own
I knew someday you'd meet someone who'd put you in your place
You started way out in the lead but finally lost the race
Your dream is a drama you used to be hot mama
I see your plans have backfired in your face
[ guitar ]
You're a fooler a faker a little heartbreaker
I realize the things are gettin' rough
You're a tricker a tracker and a little homeracker
You've been dealing from the bottom long enough
You seem to take a great delight and making teardops fall
Until the picture you hung high came a tumbling from the wall

You're stander you're scheemer you're little lovesick dreamer

I knew someday you'd get your motor stalled
Don't be a fooler a faker you little heartbreaker

Overall Meaning

Hank Thompson's "A Fooler a Faker" is a song that portrays the artist's disdain for a woman who has been leading him on with false promises and deceitful behavior. The lyrics paint the picture of a woman who is manipulative and malicious, but ultimately gets what she deserves in the end. Thompson expresses his realization of the woman's true intention, calling her a fooler and faker, as well as being a heartbreaker. He knows that she will eventually meet someone who will put her in her place, and that is precisely what happens when her plans backfire in her face.

The lyrics describe how the woman takes pleasure in making others feel bad by leading them on and then dropping them once her needs have been met. She is portrayed as a tricker and tracker who has been dealing from the bottom of the deck for too long. Thompson also highlights the irony of the woman's behavior, noting that she used to be a "hot mama" with her own dreams and aspirations, but now her plans have backfired. In the final stanza, the artist implores the woman to stop being a fooler, a faker, and a heartbreaker, warning her that eventually, she will get her "motor stalled."

Many memories of the times in the Navy and the weekend leave that we enjoyed in Newport RI

Dave, how about Skully Square in Boston??? Long gone, but was one place sailors definitely had to "visit." Don't bother to answer, I'm just getting old, reliving the good old days. Have a great day, and by the way, thanks for serving.

I played a few by him and this one on my program in the 70's.

Great song...came across this in the Bigsby book. Very Travis-esque solo...nice

@MyMy-zi7yv

Great song, as he had a lot of 'em, my best might be "Whoa Sailor," which he also wrote. It's got real life catchy, and very funny lyrics that any former U.S. Navy man would know to be true, especially if he visited ports overseas.

Hank gives it to this little lady every which way.

@janettgrady2394

nahullochafa...Ha, yeah, Hank could have given it to me in every which way he may have wanted...as long as he promised to sing me to sleep. Lady? I am. I am.

You're a fooler, a faker, a little heart breaker
The slyest gal that I've ever known
Abuser, a chooser, but now you're the loser
'Cause the heart that you've broken was your own

I knew someday you'd meet someone
Who'd put you in your place
You started way out in the lead
But finally lost the race
Your dream is a drama;
You used to be hot mama
I see your plans have backfired in your face

You're a fooler, a faker, a little heart breaker
I realize that things are getting rough
You're a tricker, a trecker, and a little home wrecker
You've been dealing from the bottom long enough

You seem to take a great delight in making tear drops fall
Until the picture you hung high come tumbling from the wall
You scanner, you schemer, you little love sick dreamer
I knew someday you'd get your motor stalled
Don't be a fooler, a faker, you little heart breaker.....
