The New Green Light
Hank Thompson And His Brazos Valley Boys Lyrics

I caught you cheatin' and runnin' around
There's a smile upon your face while another takes my place
And now at last dear the truth I'd found
Babe there's the green light you're free to go
You'll take a high road I'll take the low
Here's your coat and shoes and don't forget your bluesYou're on canoe now you'll have to row
Babe there's the green light shift your gear
I know you fooled me for all these years
I'll hold my head up high and forget you by and by
And there'll be laughter instead of tears
Babe there's the green light kick up your heels
There'll come a day you know how it feels
To have your aces trump and be taken for a chump
Now there's the green light so spin your wheels
The lyrics to Hank Thompson's song "Green Light" are about catching someone cheating and finally seeing the truth of the situation. The singer turns the cheater's "hole card upside down", revealing their deception. Despite this, the cheater wears a smile while someone else takes the singer's place. The singer then tells the cheater that they are free to go, and that they will take "the high road" while the cheater takes "the low". They even offer the cheater their coat, shoes, and blues, telling them that they're "on [their] own now", and that they'll have to "row [their] canoe".
The singer reflects on their own feelings, saying that they'll hold their head up high and forget the cheater "by and by". They even look forward to laughter instead of tears, suggesting that they're ready to move on. The singer then tells the cheater to "kick up [their] heels" and enjoy their newfound freedom, but warns that they too will one day know how it feels to be taken for a chump. As the cheater drives away, the singer tells them to spin their wheels.
Overall, the lyrics to "Green Light" convey feelings of betrayal, disappointment, and resolution. The singer is hurt by the cheater's actions but ultimately decides to move on and find happiness elsewhere.

Can't believe I was 14 when I first heard this. I loved country music even then. However it sure has changed. I stopped listening to the new stuff after Randy Travis, George Strait and Alan Jackson.
