We've Gone Too Far
Hank Thompson And His Brazos Valley Boys Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our first affair was just too dared to tempt our patience greed
I slipped around with you and found the kind of love I need
Now on the sly both you and I are deep in love somehow
These things they are we've gone too far to ever turn back now

We've gone too far to tell our hearts that our love was reckless fun
If we'd made a bad mistake I'm not sorry it was done
Though you belong to someone else and another has you now
Yet here we are we've gone too far to ever turn back now

We've gone too far when I can't sleep because I always think of you
I breathe your name and see your face in everything I do

So never leave let's make believe that it's all right somehow
For you must know I love you so and we can't turn back now

Overall Meaning

In Hank Thompson's song We've Gone Too Far, the lyrics are about a couple who have fallen deeply in love, despite the fact that they are both already committed to other people. They started their relationship with an affair that was meant to end, but things got out of hand and now they feel that they have gone too far to ever turn back. They cannot deny their feelings for each other and are willing to accept the consequences of their actions.

The first verse of the song suggests that the couple's first affair was daring and risky, but it led them to discover the love they were missing in their lives. As the relationship deepened, they knew they had gone too far to ever turn back. In the second verse, they acknowledge that their love affair was not just a reckless fling, but a serious relationship that they cannot end. Even though they belong to others, their love for each other is stronger.

The chorus reveals the depth of their feelings as the songwriter confesses that they cannot stop thinking about their lover, no matter how hard they try. They are willing to deceive themselves and society by pretending that everything is all right, simply because they cannot turn back now. The lyrics are poignant and honest, reflecting the pain and heartache that often comes with forbidden love.

Hearing this song, I have to give a cheer for one night stands. Apparently, some guys use the words in this song, trying to bullshit their way out the door and yet keep a girl on standby for a next time. Whenever Gone Too Far came on the jukebox, one of my two best girlfriends would rehash her latest score, and we'd bust a gut laughing. A fun, fun time back then, and Hank's music was a big part of it all.

I see what mean now Janett, can't blame you for loving this and Hank's other hits, the man is a legend!...

I think of how I loved having boy friends and loving country music.
My husband Mickey bought so many country records when we were so young. . Been loving it for 70 years when it was call shyte kicking music

@janettgrady2394

@@harrietritter1655 Oh, yes, I came of age (underage, really) bar-hopping and forever playing Hank on the jukebox. I must have helped Hank get as wealthy as he might have been, me dropping rolls of quarters into the jukebox to play his records.
I could fill pages about my life back then, me being a "hot little chick" forever on the prowl for Mr. Right (Yes, I found Mr. Right, been hitched since the early 1960's.) I loved playing around, me and my two best girlfriends baring leg and flashing ass, forever teasing guys, mostly rodeo cowboys, real cowboys, and long-haul truckers. I could fill pages about the "fun," but I'm afraid you might think I was a whore, which I was not. (I was still a virgin when married,) I simply loved Hank's shit-kicking music, loved dancing, and loved learning what men wanted from women, quite aside from simply getting laid. .
You and I, Hon, have at least three things in common, age, happily married, and a love for Hank's heart warming and heartbreaking songs.
If you want to exchange thoughts on comment pages, (I have comments all over Hank's videos.) please do, especially if you've ever been with a girl
. Up front, here, Hon, I am happily married to a guy who knows I like girls as much as he does, and he and I have always been on the same page when it comes to sex.
In any case, Harriet, thank you for your reply to my original comment...reminded me of how much fun I had in my youth, and brought me to my knees, thanking God for giving me such a wonderful life.
In any case, Hon, I hope to hear from you.
