Conversation
Hank Williams Jr. & Waylon Jennings Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hank, let's talk about your daddy
Tell me how your mama loved that man
Well, just break out a bottle, hoss
I'll tell you bout the driftin' cowboy band

We won't talk about the habits
Just the music and the man, that's all
Now Hank, you just got to tell me
Did your daddy really write all them songs, did he
That don't deserve no answer, hoss
Let's light up and just move along

Do you think he wrote 'em about your mama
Or about the man who done her wrong, you know that

Yeah, back then they called him crazy
Nowadays they call him a saint
Now the ones that called him crazy
Are still ridin' on his name

Well, if he was here right now, Bocephus
Would he think that we were right, do you think he might
Don't you know he would Watasha
Be right here by our side

If we left for a show in Provo
He'd be the first one on the bus and ready to ride

Wherever he is I hope he's happy
You know I hope he's doin' well, yes I do
He is 'cause he's got one arm around my mama now
And he sure did love Miss Audrey and raisin' hell

I won't ask you no more questions
To the stories only Hank could tell

Back then they called him crazy
Nowadays they call him a saint
Most folks don't know that they fired him from the Opry
And that caused his greatest pain

I loved to tell you about lovesick
How Miss Audrey loved that man
You know I've always loved to listen
To the stories about that driftin' cowboy band and the man

You know when we get right down to it
Still the most wanted outlaw in the land, yeah, woh

Overall Meaning

The Conversation by Hank Williams Jr. featuring Waylon Jennings is a tribute to Hank Williams Sr. who was an American singer-songwriter and musician regarded as one of the most significant and influential American singers and songwriters of the 20th century. The song is a conversation between two friends, Hank and Waylon discussing Hank's father, their love for his music, and how he impacted their lives. They talk about Hank Sr's musical legacy, including his ability to write songs and and the circumstances surrounding his departure from the Grand Ole Opry.

The conversation begins with Hank asking Waylon about his father and how his mother loved him. Waylon replies by telling Hank about how much he loved Hank Sr's music and his band, to which Hank responds by saying they won't talk about his father's bad habits but just focus on the music and the man. The conversation then shifts to discussing Hank Sr's songwriting ability, and Hank refuses to answer Waylon's question about whether his father wrote all his songs, and they light up a cigarette and move on.

They also discuss Hank Sr's relationships, whether he wrote songs about his mother or the man who wronged her, and how people's perception of him has changed over time. They acknowledge that he was called crazy back then but is now regarded as a saint. The song also mentions that many people don't know that Hank Sr. was fired from the Opry which caused him great pain.

Get over it. You're saying this now, your parents said it about them.

And heck, things would get pretty boring if music stagnated like you desire.

And for neo-neo-neo traditional country you have tons of modern artists.....Justin Moore, Cody Jinks, Midland, Whitey Morgan, Justin Wells, Ward Davis, Josh Hedley.

Plus tons of awesome southern/country rock, new alt-country, etc.

The stuff on modern radio just adds a new dimension. Like, country fusion.

People like you just hate moving forward. You'd rather just cling to what you believe to be your best days, wallow in nostalgia, then whine about how much everything sucks.

B-O-O-H-O-O.

Country music is more diverse now than ever before....all sounds the same.

You got that backwards.....the last ten Alan Jackson records all sound the same. Hank Jr, Waylon, Strait, Jones, Old Man Owens.....multi-decade careers of music that could have been on any album, all sounds the same.

I guess mediocore, simple minded people really do need everything to stay nice and neat without the slightest change.

Good reasons why so many people are literally being left behind in the dust in all aspects of life......the majority never has and never will stop and cater to you.

Bro country....haha....what are you a fucking renassance man? A mover and shaker? Must be one of those folks with a super intellect.

These rough voices don't need no autotune or filters. Real voices, real music, real people, real songs
