The band broke up in 1985 after their drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley died in a car accident a year earlier. Original members vocalist Michael Monroe and guitarist Andy McCoy reunited in 2001 and were active with the new line-up of Hanoi Rocks until 2009.

In the 80s, Hanoi Rocks were the most successful Finnish band internationally and are still popular in the United States, Japan, and the UK. They were also one of the first rock bands to tour in Asia, and were the first western rock band to play in Delhi. According to Finnish radio and TV personality Jone Nikula (who was also Hanoi Rocks' tour manager in the 2000s), Hanoi Rocks' albums have sold between 780,000 and 1,000,000 copies around the world, but mostly in Scandinavia and Japan. Although their album sales are strong, they are more widely known for their energetic live performances.

Hanoi Rocks was formed in Helsinki in 1979 and the first line-up included vocalist and saxophone player Michael Monroe (Matti Fagerholm), guitar player Nasty Suicide (Jan Stenfors), guitar player Stefan Piesnack, bass player Nedo and drummer Peki Sirola. The following year Piesnack, Sirola and Nedo were replaced by guitar player Andy McCoy (Antti Hulkko), bass player Sam Yaffa (Sami Takamäki) and drummer Gyp Casino (Jesper Sporre). In 1981 they moved to Stockholm and in 1982 to London to take advantage of the livelier music scene in these cities. Later that year Casino was fired and replaced by Razzle (Nicholas Dingley).

Although the band never gained significant commercial success, they have a considerable cult following and critical acclaim for their 'sleazy' yet melodic style of music. They have been cited as an influence by major bands such as Guns N' Roses and Manic Street Preachers. The re-release of Hanoi Rocks' albums on CD was in large part due to efforts by Guns N' Roses via their own record label UZI Suicide. In Finland, however, Hanoi Rocks is known as the Finnish rock band who at their time had come closest to real international fame, only much later giving way to such groups as HIM.

In 1983 the band signed to CBS Records and appeared to be on the cusp of gaining commercial acceptance. They recorded their fifth album in January 1984 with producer Bob Ezrin in his home town Toronto. The album had just been released when disaster struck in December of that same year: Razzle was killed in a car accident (the driver was Vince Neil, singer with the band Mötley Crüe). Although replaced by Terry Chimes, drummer on The Clash's first album, and René Berg from the Idle Flowers, the band never recovered; first Yaffa and then Monroe left, and in 1985 the band folded. The members spent the next 15 years in various short-lived projects, and although they worked with numerous artists including Iggy Pop, Stiv Bators, Steve Stevens, Little Steven, Samantha Fox, Sebastian Bach, Sylvain Sylvain, Nicky Hopkins, Joan Jett and Guns N' Roses they never achieved anything resembling their earlier success

In 2002 Monroe and McCoy reformed the band, with two members of the Electric Boys, and a drummer who had previously featured in Monroe's solo project. They have released two new albums and toured heavily since then.

2005 and beyond: Nasty Suicide works as a pharmacist. Sami Yaffa now plays in a band called Mad Juana with his wife, Karmen Guy, and is based in New York City. Yaffa is also touring and recording with the reformed New York Dolls. Suicide and Yaffa have appeared onstage with the reformed Hanoi although not at the same time. The single "Fashion", released in May, went straight to #1 in the Finnish singles chart. On the 8th of August, a the single 'This One's For Rock'n'Roll' was released to be downloaded from selected sites. This was featured on the album 'Street Poetry', which was released early September 2007.

In October 2008, the band announced that they will be splitting up for good in spring, 2009. The band will play their farewell tour in Japan and end their career with a gig in Tavastia, Helsinki where they originally started playing. According to Mike Monroe and Andy McCoy, the band has reached its full potential now and has gone as far as it will ever go.

I tracked down this album when I was in high school back in '92. Two steps from the Move was an awesome album. Their sound mixed Aerosmith, the Sex Pistols, AC/DC and 70's glam rock and it was an awesome wall of sound. Their look and sound got copied by just about every single big hair metal band of the mid to late 80s and they are not given nearly enough credit today.

To be fairer to all involved, they were just another copy of "The New York Dolls" in the time of Punk. Look at the style of the Glam?new Wave band "Japan" and you see all the same stuff. Duran Duran copied that from Japan. There is no shape or anything. We are all influenced. The only thing is if we create something unique as we do it. As for the movie, it's pretty poor. Amusing enough, but no heart. Great tho if it brings fans back to the things Glam Rock can give. Sad tho if they take it as one-dimensional gospel without reading Wikipadia first.

Props to GnR for paying honest homage to Hanoi Rocks. Obviously, GnR's image was influenced by HR, but what's really cool is that the title "Welcome to the Jungle" came from the HR song "Underwater World" and Axl teased his hair up for the Jungle video with obvious respect to Michael Monroe and HR. The ONLY video where Axl had big hair...for all the right reasons.

Hanoi Rocks was great, but bands like Poison, hanoi Rocks, etc came after the likes of Kiss and the other early 1970´s bands who actually brought the makeup and hair into the scene, and even some bands in the 1960´s were doing it already ; It´s just every 5-10 years the bands put on more nakeup and more hairspray, that doesn´t mean they invented the look or any copied from them, they copied from others. But it is all irrelevant, the music is great, and bands copy from bands all of the time since music began.

SleazyRoseWalker the hair matches axls early look but thats about it. Izzy stradlin on the other hand I know where he got his look from now. Supposively the look and makeup of early GNR was done by Stradlin well he did all their makeup and hair. They kicked the look right about the time they blew up which im glad they did cause their music didn't quite fit the look. I'm a huge Crue fan.. And I'm a huge Hanoi Rocks fan. But what happened to Razzle.. I'm sorry, I'll never accept it. He was so young, so talented and such a wonderful person. Maybe it wasn't all Vince's fault, but he was driving. He still lives while Razzle, that angel does not. BTW this song is beautiful. A wonderful piece of music.

Ive refused to support Crue since the accident. Vince did THIRTY DAYS in jail. He paid a lawyer a good amount of money for that. Im well aware he got a $2.5 million fine, but that merely proves my point. Rich man pays to avoid prison. Vince fought against being fairly punished for his crime, and dont be too sure he feels bad. Does "Music To Crash Your Car By'' sound like someone that feels bad?

Yes, as Michael Monroe. Of course Hanoi Rocks disbanded after Razzle died. Was it good? Let me put it this way, the Thursday i was there i saw Saxon, Vader, Marduk, Iron Maiden, Blue Oyster Cult, Immolation and a bunch others. Michael Monroe was the best show that day. THe energy is unreal. Such an amazing front man. If you get a chance, i highly recommend seeing him!

I saw Andy's wife in a local store next to my school like 7 years ago and she had Andy's guitar with her. She brought it to local hobo who was Andy's friend named Arska. Arska told me that he became a real rock dude after touchin Andy McCoy's guitar for the first time. Now he's dead. Rip Arska😢.

Ok let me not waste time... obv Guns N Rose's was extremely influenced by this band. I believe Axl and Michael actually had the same haircut and hairstyle. Just like ACDC they had an uphill battle to make it to the top in rock music. Yet they fucking rocked. Finland has not made such a contribution since and neither has Australia. Sadly from their losses GNR thrived. After Bon Scott and Razzle died the only thing stopping GNR was their own debauchery.

Glad I grew up listening to real musicians and singers who could perform live. These guys are awesome. So many great bands that didn’t sell their soul to the industry. I was born at the right time.

You do realize that they are still thousands of bands that can sing, write, and play real instruments live right? Harder to find, but they are out there. Just need to be curious and find them! Even some of the most popular current artists have real talent. You might like the current music, but that does not mean they can't sing or play music.

Sam Yaffa (later Sami Yaffa) had already decided to leave and all others were unhappy too. Look at Andy nowadays. Plays shows in small town pizzerias and bars in front of 30 people but is so high that he claims doing a world tour.

This is what happens when you JUST BE YOURSELF because the world wasn't ready for a true rockband that was DRUG FREE and only cared about the music. and NOT partying and getting laid. So because of them being ahead of their time they didn't find success. But I think their time has finally come now and all these years later they will be rewarded for all they've done to influence and inspire all of the other metal bands who made it big because of THEM. they have always been GREAT and now the fans are ready to accept them

What are you talking about? Everyone except Mike were pretty damn heavy drug and alcohol users (and even Mike had his lapses)
Similarly, most of the band were partying heavily and getting laid all over the place. It's a pretty well documented story. If their lifestyle wasn't so reckless, Razzle might even have survived

Andy McCoy is my favourite. We share the same interests. Met the guy a couple of times, never a dissapointing moment. Drunk and friendly as most finnish rock stars. Andy seems to be able to stay completely shitfaced drunk and stoned, at the same time functioning at his job better than a normal sober person. I hope to achieve that level one day.

They never broke big because the drummer Razzle was killed by Vince Neil driving drunk. The were just about to start a us tour and would have done quite well, but with Razzles death everything came to a grinding halt and they never recovered

+coalhalo you are probably right, but their album "two steps from the move," was out seven months before Razzle was killed and if it was going to do anything it would have blown up by then. Americans just didn't buy into it and were not going to buy into it. That is what I felt at the time and still feel that way.

"Two Steps from the Move" was their most successful record and was their first on a major label. And they were in the process of promoting it around the world and were gearing up for the big US tour which would have done a lot for breaking them in the states. From what I remember the lp charted in the uk and they had success in Japan . I think the death of Razzle hit the guys very hard, to the point that they no longer had it in them to go on with promotion and called it quits within a year.
You may be correct that Americans would never get into Hanoi regardless of big label promotion, being from Finland and Michael Monroes look would be tough for a lot of Americans back in the mid-eighties to accept
