Crimson Tide: Eternal Father Strong to Save
Hans Zimmer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I submitted the verse and 3rd verse earlier.

Here is the 2nd verse:

Oh Saviour whose almighty word,
The winds and waves submissive heard,
Who walkest on the foaming deep,
and calm amid it's rage did sleep

Oh hear us when we cry to Thee,

For those in peril on the sea.
AMEN

Overall Meaning

The second verse of Hans Zimmer's "Roll Tide" is a powerful tribute to Christ as the Savior who commands even the elemental forces of nature. The lyrics are based on the hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," which was written by William Whiting in 1860. The hymn has been a long-standing source of comfort and inspiration for sailors and those who travel on the sea.

In this verse, the singer acknowledges the power of Christ's word to control the winds and waves, as well as his ability to walk on water and sleep peacefully amidst a storm-tossed sea. The imagery of the "foaming deep" and "calm amid its rage" create a vivid picture of the ocean's turbulence and the tranquility that is available through faith in Christ.

The theme of the verse is a plea for divine protection and guidance for those who are at sea. The singer asks Christ to hear their cries and to help those who are in danger on the ocean. The repetition of "Oh hear us when we cry to Thee" emphasizes the urgency and sincerity of the request, making it clear that those who call out to Christ in such peril truly believe in his power to save.

Line by Line Meaning

Oh Saviour whose almighty word,
Oh saviour with your all-powerful word,

The winds and waves submissive heard,
The winds and waves obeyed your command,

Who walkest on the foaming deep,
You walked on the turbulent sea,

and calm amid it's rage did sleep
and even while the sea was raging, you remained calm and slept.

Oh hear us when we cry to Thee,
Please listen to us when we plead with you,

For those in peril on the sea.
especially for those who are in danger on the sea.

AMEN
So be it.

"Bridge, control. Sounding, sixty-five fathoms."

"Clear the bridge, aye sir."

"Submerge the ship, aye sir. Chief of the Watch! On the 1MC, dive, dive!"

For those who are interested in the words...

"Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd'st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea.
Amen."

"Amen" was added, I assume, by Hans Zimmer himself, I ain't never heard it in no other version.

Also the diminished C chord on "in" (...peril on the sea...) was, in my estimation, added by Zimmer, the other versions of this song I've heard, all have a D(7) chord with an F# bass, or something similar, at this point.

Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave,
Who bidd’st the mighty ocean deep
Its own appointed limits keep;
Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee,
For those in peril on the sea!

Eterno Pai, com teu poder
As vagas sabes submeter;
O vasto oceano pões em paz,
E no seu leito antigo jaz.
A ti clamamos; vem guardar

3:54 - 5:03 Gives me chills and goosebumps: the rising baritones, tenors and altos, then the bass and horns kicking in after. Glorious and haunting - could see a very sad but powerful moment in my life having this part of the soundtrack!
