i cried during this scene. they weren't doing it for their country or their army. those fishermen were fathers risking their lives to bring their sons back from the war. that's why it was so hard for the old man to turn the boat around. i think that paternal love was the core of the entire rescue mission and Nolan and ZImmer invoked that flawlessly and subtly in this one scene

As a 16 year old with fairly decent knowledge on the events surrounding this movie, I thought that it would be hard for me to become "emotionally shocked" during this movie as I pretty much new how it would end. But the ENTIRE soundtrack led up to this release of emotion. When the civilian ships pass the Ship full of soldiers, the nimrod kicked in and I almost cried, it was such a beautiful perception of how something so small could affect the feelings of men that had been through hell. The cheers and the singing it all got to me. Similar with Farrier and the "Silent Spitfire" scene towards the end. I salute this movie for tampering with my emotions so well, the brilliant mix of Nolans expertise film making and Zimmers amazing score. This really is a spectacle. I advise any and All to watch (IMAX if possible do not hold out for the home cinema release you wont have the same experience ) you will be captivated and trapped into the movie from the very first gunshot. I can promise that :)

Seeing the civilian flotilla of boats coming to rescue the British army made me tear up. Although it was a defeat for the Allies, it was a magical moment seeing civilians having to rescue their military. And to think that that was only the beginning of the coming war.

I can think of 3 good Kubrick films. The shinning full metal and 2001. Rest were bad. Nolan has one bad fill and that was the following. Every other film has been good with momento, prestige,dark knight, incepetion, interstellar and now dunkirk being exceptional. Blows Kubrick out of the water.

I loved how the music went from intense to slow and emotional.

From the first half of this score, you're a British soldier who wonders whether he will make it home. From the second half onwards, you cheer as you see the civilian boats arriving to pick you and your brothers up. You tear up and you know you'll be getting back to good ol' Blighty.

A truly magnificent scene.. the only scene/film ever to make me cry. A remarkable depiction of what made Britain great. Our boys were in real trouble.. sitting ducks in the face of the enemy. No means to advance, nor retreat home. Cut off from all hope of survival... Britain heard their call for help. Our civilian seamen/yachtsmen, knowingly sailing into the jaws of death, went to get them. We heard you boys, we're coming!

As much as I admire the USA I can't think of many event that we have pulled off that displays as much selflessness as the British and French on Dunkirk

Can you imagine that Winston Churchill didn't even think 30,000 could make it? He NEVER AT ALL accounted the civilians rescue for 400,000 men and on that day more than 350,000 men were saved by the courage of two allies with spirits of fire

Nolan did an excellent job depicting the fear, the helplessness and the utter exuberance of victory in this film.

I thought the same thing until I saw this documentary on 9/11. While one could could split hairs and say it was different than Dunkirk, it was an incredibly selfless act by many in New York to take their boats and help evacuate 500,000 people without fully knowing if the worst was over.

Home, home, we are going home. We are going home. Sadly, there many soldiers who could not make it onto the boats. Saw the movie 6 times, cried each time. Each and every time, cried. My papa was a Marine in WWII, he said it was the Brits who were a major factor in turning the tide (not a pun) of the war. Also, Nolan cleaned up a lot on the beaches. In reality the beaches where the BEF were trapped was littered with bodies even dead horses. The Fritz army used them to pull supplies.

I honestly would love to see a WW1 battle movie! Like the battle of Verdun or Gallipoli would be really sweet. I can just picture Hans Zimmer Music crescendoing as primitive tanks enter no mans land, mustard gas is being launched into trenches and the Red Baron battles it out in the Skies or navel ships bomb away. The Germans have been pounding the beaches without mercy, then at 4:06 the camera pans upwards and we see the line of Little Ships on the horizon.
If your eyes don't fill with tears at that moment, you aren't British
