Well, this was written and composed by Zimmer himself, hence why he gets all the credit. Zimmer was primarily in charge of all the action music cues while Howard handled the more emotional music cues. Possibly would have been that way for all three had Howard not thought of being a third wheel due to Zimmer composing Inception alone for Nolan.

I agree completely. Hardly anybody realizes how much of the music in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight was not written by Hans Zimmer but James Newton Howard. Howard added some of the more melodic and emotional pieces in the films and they supplemented Zimmer's intense main theme and pulse pounding action tracks. The two combined created a soundtrack that felt like the full realization of Batman. If it was just Zimmer alone it would have felt a little one-note. The music in the Dark Knight Rises definitely felt like it was less balanced and well rounded, like a painter only working with half the pallet.

He has no competition in present day (EXCEPT MAYBE ALEXANDER DEPLAT) but there are composers like BERNARD HERMANN, JOHN WILLIAMS and MAX STEINER who are far superior to Zimmer but retired or died decades before Zimmer became popular. Check out their work if you like movie scores, bro. Also, You don't sound like you know how much more acclaimed and successful JOHN WILLIAMS is compared to ZIMMER. You at least know that WILLIAMS wrote all of the STAR WARS and HARRY POTTER music right? He has more iconic scores and more awards and nominations than any other composer in history. If people who have listened to ALL the legendary composers like ZIMMER, WILLIAMS, STEINER, HERMANN, ENNIO MORRICONE are asked who the greatest composer of all time is, they will say either WILLIAMS or STEINER.
