99 Red Balloons
Happy Hardcore? Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You and I in a little toy shop,
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got,
Set them free at the break of dawn, one by one they have gone,
Back at base, back to the subway,
Flash the message someones out there,
Floatin' in the Summer sky, 99 Red Ballons go by.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Happy Hardcore's song "99 Red Balloons" describe two individuals in a toy store purchasing balloons with their remaining money. The visual of a toy store and balloons creates a childlike and innocent atmosphere. The two individuals then release the balloons at sunrise and watch them float away one by one. The release of the balloons symbolizes the freeing of something, a release of emotions or memories perhaps. The next line "back at base, back to the subway" implies that these individuals may be on the run or in hiding, creating a feeling of tension and drama. The flashing of a message that someone is out there emphasizes the feeling of danger or some unknown threat. The image of the balloons floating in the summer sky is beautiful and peaceful but juxtaposed against the tense situation, creating a sense of irony. The repetition of the line "99 Red Balloons go by" is like a gentle reminder that amongst the chaos, there is still beauty in the world.

Set them free at the break of dawn
'Till one by one they all were gone
Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, "Someone's out there"
Floating in the summer sky,
99 red balloons go by,
99 red balloons floating in the summer sky
Panic bells! it's red alert!
There's something here from somewhere else
The war machine it springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky as 99 red balloons go by
99 Decision Street, 99 ministers meet
To worry, worry, super scurry
Call out the troops now in a hurry
This is what we've waited for
This is it boys this is war
The president is on the line
As 99 red balloons go by
99 Kriegsminister
Streichholz und Benzinkanister
Hielten sich…

The piano sounds of this song and other at happy hardcore raves, was bliss in 1990s.

Happy hardcore was our version of classical music, the ups and downs, and it was amazing, with the strobe lights buzzing in your eyes, and you had no idea about anything in this but that moment.

Makes me laugh you people today changed the name of this music to dubstep or what ever.

Its not the same as 1990s happy hardcore.

Happy hardcore really summed up that music, and what it was like.

This is one of the first songs I ever downloaded (entirely by chance) off of Limewire back in like 2005 or 2006. It was one of, if not, the first electronic song I had in my possession. I can't believe I found this version again after all these years.
