I am born in the 80s and generally we don’t see our peers in Germany like that. But we blame a lot of the older generations for the continued racism and xenophobia and religious extremism that exist today. I think younger generations realize we are not so different. Unfortunately Putin and his older supporters have sold out the younger generations for some fantasy of the USSR one that no younger person in Russia wants or dreams of rather they wanted to be proud of being Russian while being considered European and hold many of the same values and wanting to be able to look forward to living standards and lives parallel to their western counterparts. Unfortunately that will be the complete opposite of that and they should blame their elders.

@Hannah G Lol, no Russia didn't decide "to take it". Russia decided to act after 20 years of useless warnings against NATO's expansion eastwards. If you do some basic (I mean really basic) research on how ballistics and defense systems works, you would know that every km matter. To have US nuclear weapons in Ukrainian soil is a red line that any country with a decent army would not accept.
So, please start deflecting from the main topic here, nothing to do with the "rich" Donbass (invading for their coal - Russia is making a fortune...). The issue here is purely military.

Being German and well aware of the bad fruits of those seeds planted by my grandfather’s generation under Hitler I can not thank Mr. Harari enough for saying this! Me personally I’d love to have everybody just be free, healthy and striving. Hate is such a stupid emotion, hatered is a learned concept (like all emotions probably are) and it takes some active thinking an introspection to forgive the people who are simply not responsible. I love the variety of all the different cultures in Europe! The French, Dutch, Polish, Scandinavians, British you name it and disliking someone bc of incidents from a lifetime ago is so futile but very dangerous. I very much hope the Ukrainians have the strength in their hearts to forgive the Russian people after the Putin-Dictatorship is over just like Europe managed to leave behind the hatered for Germany for the most part. Theoretically, ukrainians can forgive but there are some conditions:
- russians (not only putin) admit all their crimes
- leave Ukraine voluntarily
- compensate all the losses

I was born in Europe before the end of WW2. As a child, I saw bombed out buildings reduced to rubble. I am thinking of my parents now, who lived through it and how it changed their lives. What I mean is, in this interview specifically, he's not even mentioning the fact that NATO did'nt kept it's promise of, after the end of Soviet union, not expand to the eastern european countries, over all, the former varsovian pact countries. It obviously don't justify Putin's crimes - and it's me saing that he's comiting crimes -, but it does give him pretexts in his mind to "deffend his people and his borders" against the westarn threat. He would never allow a country like Ukraine, with vast borders with Russia, to have NATO millitary bases, army and weapons...

@Sam Music Well, for starters, Ukrainians and Russians are the same people, there is no Ukranian history without Russian and vise versa, the Russian empire started in Kiev and only centuries after they relocated the capital from Kiev to Moskow, so the fact that he is saying that they were separate entities is just a lie (and I say a lie because I have no doubt that Yuval know this for a fact).
Secondly, he know very well that the goal of Russia is not making Ukraine part of Russia nor Putin believed that he will be welcomed with open arms. Moreover Yuval is a very educated person, he knows how global politics work and why this conflict started.
Thirdly, his description of the Ukrainians and how they fight for freedom and sandwiches is just a blatant lie, my family is from Ukraine and I can tell you from first hand that this is not what is happening there this is not a situation where there are big scary baddies and little scared sheep.
And I wish there is a settlement between those nations, and a settlement for peace, however if the west will continue to misjudge Putin, Russia and Ukraine this conflict will never end.

And dispite all this he is still saying this nonsense? My only conclusion is that he is promoting his views of the world and not peace, and his views are rather extreme IMHO. Listen to his ideas for "better" future, try to understand how he sees human being and you will understand (hopefully) why I'm saying that he is a lying propagandist.

BTW, I red most of his literature (in the source language) and listened to hundreds of hours of his lacture, but back then he was just an historian (a brilliant one at that). So I know the dude very well. He's just gone crazy IMHO.

My people hardly had to learn after loosing a lot in the two world wars (together with Germans), namely power, people, territory and confidence...
Since 1955 AUSTRIA has in the so called STAATSVERTRAG the status EVER LASTING NEUTRALITY, not part of the NATO, missing link between east and west, north and south... and that is good as it is!

Yuval brings up many really good points that few are talking about in this excellent conversation. Particularly about nukes and the nuclear age. I agree with him and now see the main advantage of NATO was to keep ownership of nukes confined to few nations. Article 5 made it unnecessary to pursue and build them. Looks, to me (now that Europe can't trust leadership of States) that all bets will be off coming out of Ukraine. But I understand that we mustn't deceive ourselves and not fall for media manipulations, there may be a confrontation between the two nuclear powers (and it never ended), America and russia. I am from Romania ...we welcome all Ukrainian refugees that come to our borders, there are people opening their houses, other bring free food and drinks and arrange transport. NATO decisions would never ever involve us to begin with...It is US who will call the shots most likely and we would execute.I understand that this is a nightmare scenario that broke peace in Europe and trust when I say that I sympathize greatly and I wish the war be forever gone. I know from history the tentacles of the Bolshevic KGB state did not die in 1991 (but just went in a 30 year "liberal" travesti).

@Rajat Shinde support for Putin come from poorest areas mostly, just one reason mostly - no alternative media to get news, only tv (all channels controlled by government censorship) and papers (also almost none against current regime, but few trying to speak, and their newspapers get confiscated before local release). Almost everyone who use internet can get alternative sources of news. (Many people still have slow internet, so they are can’t see video etc, but can read) also, you need to be tech savvy at least a bit, because most internet resources blocked atm, just searching won’t help, you need to know when, like telegram channels etc.
Many many Russians have relatives in Ukraine and that’s definitely help, because they can speak through regular phone.
People still in shock. Lugansk and Donetsk situation wasn’t really popular after 2015. So when people start to see that dollar and euro rise up they are try to search for info, and most of the time start with tv ofc, but because Ukraine still stand times go and more more people realize what actually happened. Recently more that 3000 moms start to try get info where they’re sons really is… and that moms from poor areas mostly…
I’m Russian citizen, but half Ukraine and have relatives in Ukraine, as most Russian I guest. Many people in Russia in deep regrets of what happening right now, and try to spread alternative news, sending money to help, but our government making that more harder and harder each day. ( we can’t donate to Red Cross for example, but we are still finding ways to donate and help 🤫)
