1) Harem Scarem is a Rock band hailing from Ontario, Canada, formed in 1987. They renamed themselves Rubber in 1999 and released two albums under that name. In 2001, they went back to the Harem Scarem name. In the Summer of 2007 they announced they "will officially break-up after one more studio album." They would reform in 2013 and has released four more albums since then.
2) Harem Scarem emerged from Melbourne's mid-80's indie scene, but, it could be argued, were closer in sound to classic Australian blues-rock from a decade before (Dingoes, Coloured Balls, Chain, Rose Tattoo etc.). Their sound was infused with a heady mix of punk spirit and Stax soul that also made them contemporaries of the likes of The Gun Club and the Beasts Of Bourbon.
Harem Scarem first appeared on the Melbourne Psychobilly compilation “Asleep at the Wheel”. They soon developed (via the “Dogman” EP and some key line-up changes) into a powerhouse live act, where Christopher Marshall's extraordinary, passionate vocals combined with Charlie Marshall's stonesy guitar.
With the classic line-up of the Marshall brothers, Barry Palmer (guitar), Glen Sheldon (bass), Peter Jones (drums) and Chris Wilson (harmonica & sax), the band went into the studio with producer John Archer (Hunters & Collectors) and emerged with this, their masterful 1986 album: Pilgrim's Progress (now re-issued by Aztec Music http://www.aztecmusic.net/)
3) Harem Scarem is a Scottish contemporary folk band http://www.haremscaremscotland.co.uk who have collaborated with Will Oldham AKA 'Bonnie Prince Billy'
Out Of Love
Harem Scarem Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I never thought it could get me down
I'm in search of the perfect world
And I'll be searching until it's found
I get the feeling I'll be awhile
The roads to nowhere lead to mornings
where I don't know where I'll be
Out Of Love out of danger
So now anyway you want
I guess that's how it'll be
Finding love is a stranger
So now anyway you want it
It just don't matter to me
I would do almost anything
If I thought it would help me now
I just want to forget mistakes
But just wanting won't show me how
All the nights that I hold so dear
Still living in those times
Wishing this were reality
No conscience by my side
I realize my life could have been much more
I'm thinking of closing my eyes
Never to see my world alive anymore
The first stanza of the song talks about the singer's everyday life that seems to be repetitive and mundane. He seems to be looking for a perfect world, but the search is taking longer than expected, and he is still on the journey. The second stanza discusses how he is struggling to forget about his mistakes and move on. He wishes that his past memories were the present reality, and it is evident that he is struggling to deal with his conscience.
Moving on to the chorus, the words "Out of Love out of danger" seem to suggest that the singer feels like he is safe because he no longer loves anyone. He adds that he is okay with things being any way the other person wants because it does not matter to him anymore. The phrase "Finding love is a stranger" highlights the difficulty of finding love, which makes it feel unfamiliar or strange. He then reasserts that it does not matter because he is okay with anything.
The last stanza expresses the singer's disappointment with his life. He thinks that it could have been better but now feels like it is too late. The singer seems to be considering taking his own life as he contemplates closing his eyes and never seeing the world again. The song seems to be a reflection on the struggles of life, the difficulty of finding love, the consequences of our mistakes, and the feeling of hopelessness that sometimes engulfs us.

Can't believe it's not re-recorded and posted on (for example) Mood Swings II. This is one of the most rockin' songs of HS!

@kennedymark1 It was re-record in the late 90's by Jon Fiore. Produced by Harry Hess. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFcYgGzkV5Y
