Are You Real
Harold Mabern/Kieran Overs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are too beautiful, my dear, to be true
And I am a fool for beauty
Fooled by a feeling that because I have found you
I could have bound you too

You are too beautiful for one man alone
For one lucky fool to be with
When there are other men
With eyes of their own to see with

Love does not stand sharing
Not if one cares
Have you been comparing
My every kiss with theirs

If, on the other hand, I'm faithful to you
It's not through a sense of duty
You are too beautiful
And I am a fool for beauty

Love does not stand sharing
Not if one cares
Have you been comparing
My every kiss with theirs

If, on the other hand, I'm faithful to you
It's not through a sense of duty

You are too beautiful
And I am a fool for beauty

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song “Are You Real” by Harold Mabern/Kieran Overs's focuses on the idea that beauty can make people act irrationally. The opening line, “You are too beautiful, my dear, to be true / And I am a fool for beauty” shows how the singer is struck by the beauty of the person they are addressing. They go on to say that they are “fooled by a feeling” which could be interpreted to mean that they are not thinking clearly or logically.

The lyrics then shift to discussing how the person's beauty is so captivating that it's impossible for just one person to appreciate. “You are too beautiful for one man alone / For one lucky fool to be with / When there are other men / With eyes of their own to see with.” This line can be interpreted as the singer recognizing that they are not the only one to be drawn to this person and that there is likely competition for their attention.

The lyrics then delve into the idea that love cannot be shared and that the singer is aware that the person they are addressing may be comparing them to others. “Love does not stand sharing / Not if one cares / Have you been comparing / My every kiss with theirs.” This line shows insecurity and may indicate that the singer is afraid of losing the person they are addressing to someone else. The final lines of the song, “If, on the other hand, I'm faithful to you / It's not through a sense of duty / You are too beautiful / And I am a fool for beauty” show that the singer is willing to be faithful to the person not because of obligation but because of their beauty.

Wow!! This is fantastic ..... thank you for uploading and sharing this set of music. This was my favorite quartet of George's and I've seen this band many nights at the Village Vanguard during the 80s - 90s. George Coleman is a king of the tenor saxophone. I truly miss Harold Mabern, Jamil Nasser and Idris Muhammad.
