Led by Harold Melvin, they formed as early as 1954, but struggled for many years until they finally broke through in 1972, thanks to then-new lead singer Teddy Pendergrass. With the addition of Pendergrass, and the orchestral productions that Gamble & Huff supplied them with, the group found success with such tracks as "I Miss You", "If You Don't Know Me By Now", and "The Love I Lost". Together with The Spinners, The O'Jays and The Delfonics, among others, they helped to define the philly sound. In 1976, Pendergrass left for a solo career, and the Blue Notes were not able to sustain their success for long without him, though they continued to record until 1984.

My mum used to play this in the 70s when I was a kid and she used to get sent by it. Now I'm the one getting sent to places I ain't been before.
This song has everything.
The best intro I ever heard, bitter sweet, oh and his voice!!
It literally makes me smile all the way through with a lump in my throat at the same time.
And the cool disco section you can have a right dance too

This is part of Rock. They should be in Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. Rock doesn't have one definition. There are so many examples of what rock is, such as being combination of 12 bar blues with Jazz. Or Blues on Steroids with Zeppelin. Rockabilly. It's natural development of music of styles, influences, coming together starting mostly in Black Culture in America. I hear this and I get such a poignant burst of nostalgia...makes me cry. The superb base player and beautiful melody....just takes me back to when I was aged 20... life was a mix; of dressing to the ' new romantic' nines for all day discos - with no worries in my world - and the promise of a fantastic adventure still ahead of me. I never had a broken heart or gave one, still had all my loved ones round me and I was the happiest I have ever been in my life. Wish I could go back and live every precious moment of those years again. We who were having the time of our young lives in the eighties were surely the luckiest of all.

Even though I listened to this album in true time, I never heard this version until much later! And the soulfulness of Teddy’s voice is like being in church first Sunday hunni!!!
