@jonnym no I don't use houses as a tool to measure inflation, which is a very general term . I used the house to explain purchasing power as an example. Houses are not a uniform assets they differ in the same city .

There are asset inflation
Wage inflation
Consumer goods inflation etc .

I used oil and gold , the gold has always had value and oil because after 1971 its 1 of the main commodities backing the dollar ( look up petrodollars) .

Not all houses have outgrown inflation around the western world you can buy a house for $1,€1,£1, 1 dollar , 1 euro , and 1 british pound . Cities were the manufacturing jobs have disappeared have seen a serious drop in house prices like Detroit.

These are teardown houses in bad areas were the city needs occupants to increase its tax revenues.

In short ( because this is not the right place for a long debate) different wage and asset classes have changed differently in the past 35 years .

Consumer good have not changed much
Wages are stagnant for the most part
Assets and commodities have increased.

So when ppl say inflation it depends which items they are using as a measuring stick .

30 million in 1985 is not worth only 70 million, if you put 30 million in the bank in 1985 at %12 interest it would get you 126 million over 30 years plus the 30 million.

So 30 million is closer to 150 to 200 million.

FYI in the movie the bank said they have a special interest rate reserved for special clients at %24 now that's double what I typed.

I think the whole idea of why the great uncle wanted to do this to Monty was that he didn't want Monty to just spend his inheritance like water. He wanted him to save so he could have a good life. So he has him spend that money to get him so sick of it that he'll never want to spend money again like that, which is how he feels at the end.

Yes, but what made that stamp "Inherently valuable" was its rarity; by sending it through the postal service, the cancellation of that stamp now rendered it much less valuable to a collector who certainly wouldn't pay $1,000,000+ for a cancelled stamp. Therefore, while he used the stamp for its purpose, he did still "destroy what was inherently valuable". Otherwise, he could have easily just purchased $30,000,000 worth of extremely rare coins from the 1800s and spend them at face value...

Loved this movie since I was a kid. But I never understood how Monty got away with using the stamp for postage. His great uncle specifically said: "you must not destroy what is inherently valuable" just like burning the Picassos.

Destroyed means no longer valuable, the stamp is still extemely valuable even used, especially if (incorrectly) the film states It's the only one. Also he used it for its PURPOSE, a stamp. Whether that makes it less valuable is someone elses opinion. Something is only as valuable as what someone is willing to pay for it.

With Hollywood having been in remake mode of older movies the last 10 or so years, I don't know why they haven't remade this one already. It has a funny story line. I could see someone like Jamie Foxx playing the role of Brewster. He's funny and good enough to play the part.

Of course you destroy the "value" (and by "value" we're talking RESELL value) when you eat it because you cannot resell it to anyone else. Value for expensive collectibles is tied to what other collectors would pay for it. Mailing the stamp rendered it useless to a collector who values rare stamps for their pristine unmailed uncancelled state.

The fact that the stamp was worth more than the postage is irrelevant. Actually, he did not destructively misuse the item but merely use it for its "purpose," postage. Therefore he didn't actually destroy the stamp, but only changed its value by mailing it. However, once a painting is finished (a Picasso), people do not do anything but hang it for others to view as its "purpose" is only to be looked at by the viewer. @Henry Livingstone Something similar was actually the plot of the Mel Brooks film The Producers. Though they did it as an attempt to swindle money out of an arts fund. I kind of wonder if such a star studded cast really could bomb... though maybe if they were all background characters, like, people that don't interact with the protagonist. There was a movie that starred Jackie Chan. He was on the cover of the box, top billing and he was in the previews. It disappointed me to find out he was actually only hired to appear in one short fight scene and was nowhere in the rest of the movie. Of course, while that might work, the director would have to negotiate the contract with the actors union to make sure it's fair. Would be possible. My guess though, considering the strict time limitation, is that they'd try to make it an unfinished production because they've only got a month. Or it'd be sloppily cut together for lack of editing time. Then they'd absolutely have to show it in theaters, which might turn a profit, especially is it's so bad that it's good.

Actually by postal law .. the owner of a letter who sends a stamp .. the stamp then becomes the property of the person who recieves it. So that tarted up lawyer got the used stamp. When it was sent it was valuable, but it was still possible to use it as a stamp. The stamp was defaced and devalued through the postal service .. and not by Brewster. Its a valid agreement.

If i were brewster, i would throw the birthday party i have always wanted. I would rent out the fanciest/intact and kept up palace or castle in europe and invite fly in all of my family and friends in first class. I would then rent costumes for them and myself to where i am the king and my friends and family are my court. I would have it catered by every big name chef and baker in the world. I would tell my family and friends the reason i am blowing all my inheritance is because i am dying of a terminal illness and i want to celebrate the remaining days of my life like each one was a birthday and i want to do it with the people who make my life so special. I was thinking something along these lines but you do have to be careful because one of the provisions is that you must get value for your $. Therefor you can't pay 30 million $ for a pack of gum. You can't grossly overpay. So the question becomes then how much is the going rate to have robin williams come to your party. It's still probably quite a bit, and if you did this with every A list celebrity for the whole 30 days.. you'd be off to a good start :)

The thing I never understood was why didn't he just buy a bunch of houses and then sell them each for $1.00? That's not "destroying what's inherently valuable". And the rules say "at the END of 30 days you're not allowed to own any assets". That sounds within the rules to me.

Semantics in word choices. The rule was that he must not "destroy anything that's inherently valuable". What made the stamp inherently valuable was it's pre-cancelled pristine state. By mailing it, for all intents and purposes, to a collector who would value the stamp at millions of dollars, he "destroyed" it, rendering it as not a prized collector's item anymore. Per rare paintings, people who collect the obscenely high-valued ones typically store them in vaults, not above their beds ;)

The movie didn't clarify the rules enough, but say if it did, you could only donate 5%, and say gamble 5%, and can only give 5% to a political campaign. The total budget allowed for hired help and other services, on yourself and others such as renting a hotel room, food, etc., is 5%. You can tell no one. Someone will be at your side to monitor you to insure you don't tell anyone why you are spending all this money in 30 days and have no assets. Is it possible? It would difficult at best because anything you buy could be an asset. Enough control measures would be in place to make sure you can't cheat and take an easy way out. Outcome in real life? A pretty difficult task to undertake and succeed at.

Great film but they forgot alot of clauses. He couldve just rented the most expensive hotel in the world, bought a ton of Champagne and a ton of high class hookers and hed have been done in a couple of weeks lol

Ah .. but the whole trick was in the usage. See .. he didnt destroy the stamp by affixing it to the letter. He didnt mark the envelope himself .. thereby he wasnt actually destroying the stamp himself. As an affixed stamp .. he didnt destroy its actual value .. which is only determined over and above the cost by its rarity and desirablity .. both user-defined commodities. So he didnt destroy its assessed value .. he paid fair price and did not actually mutilate the stamp while he had it.

I think the most effective way to spend the the money would be to hire people to do tasks and to rent things. What if I hired every Uber driver in the U.S. to collect real time traffic data? An insane waste of money.

Hire an obscene amount of people to follow you around with cameras and someone recording everything you say. Go to the most expensive shop in the world, just start smashing everything while everyone records you doing it intentionally. Tell them to take you to court. Hire the most expensive lawyers you can. Go to court. Whether you win or lose, you're still out millions easily, and you didn't destroy anything you bought.

maybe he was too honest. at the beginning of the will he said he always believed in honesty. i suppose even honesty has limits that shouldn't be crossed. like, if someone asked you if you took a shit today, and you knew the answer, and it was an explosive shit earlier that day, that would be one of those things that would be too nasty to answer honestly.

The premise of the entire movie is flwed when you think about how many ways you could spend it all in a day with the 2 or 3 things he said you couldnt do. Its just chewing gum for the brain its not like cssablanco or Citizen Kane its not being poured over in film schools.

He addressed that when he put the clause that Brewster had to get value for the services of those he hires. This means that Brewster can't wildly overpay his staff, he has to keep the salary's of those he hires within what is somewhat reasonable for the service they give. Brewster can't just pay someone an exorbitant amount like a million dollars, unless he can reasonably justify why they are worth that much. Brewster could get around paying his staff such as the decorators and his photographer so much because most of them were exclusively working for him, and had to forgo any other employment they would have normally gotten during that period. This also automatically meant Brewster could only hire people who services he needed and could use, so he couldn't waste the money by hiring a bunch of people who stood around doing nothing for him.
