Sunny
Harry Archer and his Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walked with no one and talked with no one
And I had nothing but shadows
Then one morning you passed
And I brightened at last
Now I greet the day and complete the day
With the sun in my heart
All my worry blew away
When you taught me how to say

Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worry on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
To the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter-pat?
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But I'm not afraid
This Rover crossed over

If I never have a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
Gold dust at my feet

On the sunny side of the street
Grab your street

Overall Meaning

This classic song, "On The Sunny Side of The Street," performed by Harry Arnold and his Swedish Radio Studio Orchestra, is an uplifting tune about embracing positivity and leaving one's worries behind. The opening lines describe a life of isolation, where the author "walked with no one and talked with no one" and only saw shadows. But one day, a chance encounter with someone special gave the author hope and joy. The rest of the song encourages listeners to find their own happiness by abandoning negativity and focusing on the bright side of life.

The song's chorus is particularly memorable, encouraging us to put on our coats and hats and head out into the world, leaving our worries at home. The lyrics implore us to embrace the sounds of our own footsteps as we walk towards a brighter future. The author encourages listeners to take courage and not be afraid to step out of the shadows, as they did themselves. And even if they never have money, they can feel rich because they have happiness.

This classic tune is a reminder to choose happiness and positivity, even when times are tough. It's an upbeat and catchy song that encourages us to find joy in our lives, and take comfort in knowing that brighter days are always ahead.

This tune is surely sizzling like a hot sun. I love the radiant pictures, especially those with the ladies wearing fashionable fancy outfits as if they were in a city café rather than on the beach (@1:34 for example)

@dzheger two Today, you UNdress - while then, they DRESSED UP to walk out to the beach and look PROPER.

Trombonology Erstwhile

It's funny -- you always hear about the show "Sunny" in connection with Kern, for having been one of his early successes, but it was, of course, not this title tune, but "Who" that became the standard.  "Sunny," the song, is cute, nevertheless; Archer seems to have favored a kind of fussy variety of hot, with a lot going on in the arrangement, rather than space for soloists.  Great banjo-tuba support on this side.  ... Love the girls, cars and dog at 2:30.

@Trombonology Erstwhile Who is a wonderful tune, one of most important icons of the Roaring Twenties worldwide. I think, it was when I was about 13-14 y.o. and I read one of short stories by... well, I think, it was Mary McCarthy. It took place in the late 1920s and was about the young couple, an American flapper and her boyfriend. They are getting ready for a party and she, while waiting idly for him in a sitting-room, plays carelessly on the piano some dance refrains of the day. And the autors writes, that at the end "she played "Who".
When I read it, and not knowing very much about other titles the autor mentions, I suddenly got enormously proud that I knew what "Who" was! - we had it in our family collection!! and I played it very often, especially performed by Dajos Bela, which I loved most of all.
