Angelina
Harry Belafonte Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Angelina, Angelina, please bring down your concertina
And play a welcome for me 'cause I'll be coming home from sea

Yes it's so long since I've been home
Seems like there's no place to roam
Well I've sailed around the Horn
I've been from San Jose up to Baffin Bay
And I've rode out many a storm

Angelina, Angelina, please bring down your concertina
And play a welcome for me 'cause I'll be coming home from sea

Well I've heard the bawdy tunes
I've been in honky tonk saloons
I took my liquor by the vat
Well I stayed on call for a rousing brawl
Home was where I hung my hat

Angelina, Angelina, please bring down your concertina
And play a welcome for me 'cause I'll be coming home from sea

Now I've courted many a girl
I've been in ports all around the world
But my rambling days are done
I've been from Curacao up to Tokyo
And I've found there's only one

And she is Angelina, Angelina, please bring down your concertina
And play a welcome for me 'cause I'll be coming home from sea

Overall Meaning

The song "Angelina" by Harry Belafonte is a heartfelt tribute to the singer's love for his wife. The viewer gets a sense that Harry has been away for a while at sea and wants his wife to play him a welcome song. The chorus repeats the line, "Angelina, Angelina, please bring down your concertina/And play a welcome for me 'cause I'll be coming home from sea," which evokes emotions of longing for home and a desire for love and familiarity.

In the first verse, Harry expresses that he's homesick and has been sailing for a long time. He mentions that he's been to different places, including San Jose and Baffin Bay, and experienced severe weather conditions. In the second verse, he talks about his experiences in different ports, where he heard bawdy tunes and drank a lot of alcohol. But he adds that there's no place like home and that his heart belongs to one person- Angelina. In the final verse, he conveys that he's done with his rambling days and has realised that Angelina is the only one he wants.

Overall, "Angelina" is a wonderful song that contains vivid imagery of life at sea and the desire for a long-lasting love. The song calls for the simplicity of life and a yearning for something familiar and comfortable, which Angelina represents.

This is one of the songs I remember most from my mom's Harry Belafonte records. We had a big floor model stereo record player that she spun the records on. Brings me back to those sunny summer afternoons in my childhood over 60 years ago. Used to dance to the music while helping Mom with housework. I have all Mom's Harry Belafonte records now and play them for myself and my budgies!
