The Baby Boy
Harry Belafonte Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The Virgin Mary had a baby boy
The Virgin Mary had a baby boy
And they gave him the name of Jesus
He came from the Glory,
He came from the Glorious Kingdom,
Oh yes, Believer, oh, yes, Believer
He came from the Glory,
The wise men saw when the baby born
The wise men saw where the baby born
The wise men went where the baby born
And they said that his name was Jesus
He came from the Glory,
He came from the Glorious Kingdom,
Oh yes, Believer, oh, yes, Believer
He came from the Glory,
He came from the Glorious Kingdom,
They saw the star over Bethlehem
That glorious star over Bethlehem
The trailed that star over Bethlehem
To the crib of the child named Jesus
He came from the Glory,
He came from the Glorious Kingdom,
Oh yes, Believer, oh, yes, Believer
He came from the Glory,
He came from the Glorious Kingdom,
They found a manger in Bethlehem
A lowly manger in Bethlehem
And in that manger in Bethlehem
They worshipped the child named Jesus
He came from the Glory,
He came from the Glorious Kingdom,
Oh yes, Believer, oh, yes, Believer
He came from the Glory,
He came from the Glorious Kingdom
The song "The Baby Boy" by Harry Belafonte is a traditional Christmas carol that tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ, as told in the Bible. The lyrics emphasize the miraculous nature of Jesus' birth, as he is born of the Virgin Mary and comes from the Glory, or the Glorious Kingdom of God.
The first verse begins with the repeated line, "The Virgin Mary had a baby boy," underscoring the importance of Mary's role in Jesus' birth. The second verse introduces the wise men, who travel to see the baby and recognize him as Jesus. The third verse tells of the star that leads the wise men to Bethlehem and the manger where Jesus is born. Finally, the fourth verse highlights the humility of Jesus' birthplace and the reverence of those who worshipped him there.
The song's simple melody and repetitive lyrics make it a popular Christmas carol, often sung in church services and holiday concerts. The theme of the carol, focusing on the miraculous birth of Jesus and the homage paid to him by the wise men, is an important aspect of the Christmas story and the Christian faith.

Simple, excellent. Also known as "The Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy," this is one of my two favorite Belafonte religious songs. It was recorded on the album Jump Up Calypso. It puts the Mormon Tabernacle version to shame. His voice and the voices of the male chorus behind him sway lightly to the syncopated tempo but always keep precise time -- making it that much more effective; this is one of the charms of the song. Belafonte made everything sound easy to sing, but it wasn't always.

Simple beauty, soft and low-key, but powerful. Just curious, what other religious song did he do that you like? God bless.
