Play that theme man.
Jackass will jump and bray, let him bray, let him bray
I say the Jackass will jump and bray,
Lordy let him bray, let him bray, everybody!

Now I tell you in a positive way
Don't tie me donkey down there
Cause me donkey will rump and play
Don't tie me donkey down there

Now me donkey gone mad they say
Don't tie me donkey down there
"Cause his eye on a bale o' hay
Don't tie me donkey down there

Now the news really travel fast
Don't tie me donkey down there
When me donkey in the meadow grass
Don't tie me donkey down there

Now me heart is light and gay
Don't tie me donkey down there

He haw 'till judgment day
Don't tie me donkey down there

Overall Meaning

"The Jack-Ass Song" by Harry Belafonte is a playful and upbeat tune about a mischievous donkey. The chorus, "Jackass will jump and bray, let him bray, let him bray, I say the Jackass will jump and bray, Lordy let him bray, let him bray, everybody!" is a call to let the animal be, allowing it to express its energy and character. Belafonte imitates the donkey's bray throughout the song, adding to the fun and jovial tone.

The verses tell a story of a donkey that is free-spirited and independent, constantly in search of things to eat and places to roam. The singer pleads with listeners not to tie the donkey down because it will only rebel and cause trouble. The donkey's antics and escapades are the talk of the town, spreading quickly through gossip and rumor.

On a deeper level, the song might be seen as a celebration of freedom and resistance against control and oppression. The stubborn, braying donkey becomes a symbol of those who refuse to be tamed or subdued, cherishing their autonomy and individuality.

Overall, "The Jack-Ass Song" is a fun and catchy tune that encourages listeners to embrace their inner jackass and let loose.

I learn a lot of his songs in primary school ( elementary)in Jamaica. It was normal to be taught folks and traditional cultural songs in school. I remember learning this one but didn't even remember it and didn't know Harry sang it. Maybe I was told in school but can't remember.β€πŸ˜‚
