Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me
Harry Connick Jr. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Pay no attention to what's said
Why one should tear the seam of anyone's dream
It's over my head
At least consider our romance
If you should take the word of others you heard
Baby, I haven't a chance
True, I've been seen
With someone new
That doesn't mean
I've been untrue
While we're apart
The words in my heart
Reveal how I feel about you
Some kiss may cloud my memory
And other arms may hold a thrill
But please do nothin' till you hear it from me
Baby, you never will
In Harry Connick Jr.'s song "Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me," the singer is urging his love interest to disregard any rumors or hearsay about his fidelity without first hearing from him directly. He cautions them to not be swayed by external forces attempting to tear apart their relationship without any evidence. The singer claims that he has been seen with someone new, but that does not necessarily imply that he has been unfaithful. The singer longs for their affection to persist beyond any temporary dalliances he may encounter.
The song can be seen as a plea for communication in a relationship, in which an inability to communally approach issues leads to a distance between two partners. Additionally, the singer's assertion that their love interest should "do nothin' till you hear from me" could also be interpreted as a threat that if the relationship does end on false pretenses, the blame will solely be on the inattentiveness of the love interest. The song's bluesy, mellow melody takes on a tone of longing and regret, mirroring the singer's words as they entreat for closeness.
