Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer
Harry Connick Jr. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey Kids!
You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen
Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all

Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows

All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
"Rudolph, with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight"

Then how the reindeer's loved him
As they shouted out with glee

"Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You'll go down in history"

Overall Meaning

The song Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, performed by Harry Connick Jr., tells the story of a reindeer named Rudolph who stands out from the rest because of his bright and shiny red nose. The first verse of the song introduces listeners to the familiar names of the other reindeer. However, it is Rudolph who is the most famous of them all.

The second verse describes Rudolph's unique feature, his red shiny nose, which sets him apart from the other reindeer. Unfortunately, this difference often leads to ridicule and exclusion from his peers, who make fun of him. Rudolph's isolation is highlighted in the third verse, where we learn that he has never been allowed to join in any of the reindeer games.

The tone of the song shifts in the fourth verse when Santa Claus recognizes Rudolph's potential and invites him to guide his sleigh on a foggy Christmas Eve. It is at this point where the other reindeer start to appreciate Rudolph and embrace him as one of their own.

Ultimately, the song ends on a high note with the reindeer celebrating Rudolph's success and immortalizing him in history. The song has a clear message of embracing differences and the importance of recognizing one's individuality.
