Harry James & His Orch. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Cherry, cherry, you're hard to get
Cherry, cherry, I'll get you yet
Cherry, cherry, don't you forget
Cherry, cherry, you'll be my pet

And when I do you'll find out
Just what love is all about
Oh, cherry, cherry, don't you forget

Cherry, cherry, I'll get you yet
Cherry, cherry, I'll get you yet

Overall Meaning

Harry James's song ‘Cherry’ is essentially about pursuing someone who is difficult to attain. The singer uses the imagery of a cherry - an enticing, attractive fruit - to symbolize someone he is trying to win over. He repeats the phrase ‘cherry, cherry’ several times throughout the song to drive home his point. He’s persistent in his pursuit, declaring that he will eventually ‘get’ this person - though he never elaborates on what ‘getting’ them actually means. Rather, he promises that once he does win them over, they will ‘find out just what love is all about.’ Thus, the song is not only about pursuit, but also about the transformative power of love and how it can change a person's perspective on life.

The song has a playful, upbeat tone, with James’s trumpet taking center stage throughout. The melody is catchy and memorable, making it easy to sing along to the repetitive lyrics. While the song may seem simplistic at first glance, it is actually quite poetic in its use of symbolism and metaphor. The cherry represents not only physical beauty, but also the elusive qualities of love and human connection. Overall, ‘Cherry’ is a fun, lighthearted tune that captures the excitement and uncertainty of pursuing a romantic interest.

@CPorter

Oh nice, they finally let this one get uploaded again! For a while this was part of the list of songs unable to be used in any YT video. Guess they finally got a way around it.

@the78prof72

Rather than continue to try uploading blocked titles, I just go ahead and 'publish' them all initially so they'll be immediately accessible if/when the block gets lifted. This one went up with the re-posting project last May and started getting views this past December 22nd.

@CPorter

@@the78prof72 that figures. Until Today, the last time I attempted listening to the entire Hits Archive for 1944 was back in November. By "Song Title" I made it down to Humoresque - Guy Lombardo for today.
