I Only Have Eyes For You
Harry James Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Are the stars out tonight
I don't know if it's cloudy or bright
'Cause I only have eyes for you dear

The moon may be high
But I can't see a thing in the sky
'Cause I only have eyes for you
I don't know if we're in a garden
Or on a crowded avenue
You are here, so am I
Maybe millions of people go by
But they all disappear from view
And I only have eyes for you

Are the stars out tonight
I don't know if it's cloudy or bright
'Cause I only have eyes for you
Only have eyes for you

I don't know if we're in a garden
Or on a crowded avenue
You are here, so am I
Maybe millions of people go by
But they all disappear from view

And I only have eyes for you
Only have eyes for you

Overall Meaning

In the song "I Only Have Eyes For You," the singer contemplates whether the stars are shining that night or whether it's cloudy or bright outside. However, the answer doesn't seem to matter because their focus is solely on their beloved. They can't see the moon in the sky, and even if they're surrounded by crowds of people, their attention is only on their partner. The singer represents the love and adoration they feel towards someone special, and the extent to which they are all-encompassing in their love.

The lyrics suggest that it's not just the person their eyes are fixed on, but also the feeling of love. The use of the phrase "only have eyes for you" implies that their partner holds their entire focus and that they are so captivated by their love that everything else fades away. They may be surrounded by people or places, but they all disappear from the singer's view because they can't look away from their lover. The song conveys the universal feeling of being in love and the way that it overtakes one's senses, making everything else pale in comparison.

Beautiful song and very well sung by Doris Day.  The orchesta is good as is the chorus also.  All combine perfectly.  I wonder, -What happened to the talent singers of the past century had?  Nowadays they only record crap and pass it off as music with a few exceptions like Selena Gomez and Shakira.

I totally agree

James McEwan

This is the same version as recorded for Tea for Two in 1950 with Axel Stordahl - I think it was put into the Young Man With a Horn album in 1954 when they expanded it.
