Jesse James
Harry McClintock Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

ahh the people held their brethe when they heard of jesse's death, wondered how he came to die.
For the big grey war and little Robert Ford shot Jesse James on the sly.
It was Robert Ford that dirty little coward.
I wonder how he does feel?
For he eat Jesse's bread and he slept in Jesse's bed then he layed Jesse James in his grave.
Jesse leaves a wife that will mourn all her life, the children that he left will pray.
For bob for the coward that shot Mr.
Howard and layed Jesse James in his grave.
Jesse was a man, a friend to the poor, never see a man suffer pain.
But with his brother Frank, he robbed the springfeild bank and stopped the Glendale train.
It was his brother Frank that robbed the Galiton.
And carried the money from the town.
It was in this very place, they had a little chase and they shot Captain Sheeks to the ground.
Jesse leaves a wife that will mourn all her life, the children that he left will pray.
For bob for the coward that shot Mr.
Howard and layed Jesse James in his grave.
They went to the cross'em not very far from there.
And there they did the same.
For the agent on his knees he dilivered up the keys to the outlaws Frank and Jesse James.
Twas on a saturday night and Jesse was at home.
Talk'n to his family brave.
Bob ford came along deep in the night and Jesse James in his grave.
Oh they layed poor Jesse in his grave yes lord.
They layed Jesse James in his grave.
Oh he took from the rich and gave it to the poor.
But they layed Jesse James in his grave.
Jesse went to his rest with his hand on his breast.
The devil will be upon his knee.
He was born one day in the county of clay and came from a solitary raise.
Now men when you go out into the West.
Never be afraid to die.
They had the law in their hands, but they didn't have the sand to take Jesse James alive.
Jesse leaves a wife that will mourn all her life, the children that he left will pray.
For bob for the coward that shot Mr.
Howard and layed Jesse James in his grave.
Oh they layed poor Jesse in his grave yes lord.
They layed Jesse James in his grave.

Oh he took from the rich and he gave in to the poor.
But they layed Jesse James in his grave.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Harry McClintock's song "Jesse James" recount the story of the notorious outlaw, his criminal activities, and his eventual death at the hands of Robert Ford. The verses describe Jesse as a friend to the poor and a man who despised seeing others suffer. But his criminal activities, such as robbing banks and trains with his brother Frank, are also highlighted. The chorus reflects on Jesse's death and the mourning of his family, while also condemning the actions of Ford, who betrayed Jesse by shooting him in the back.

The song raises questions about the morality of Jesse's actions, portraying him as a complex figure who both helped and harmed others. The mention of Robert Ford, who was credited with killing Jesse James, adds a layer of intrigue to the story. Moreover, the song suggests that Jesse James became a legend after his death, with his memory being celebrated even though his actions were illegal.

Currently going through Dylan's The Philosophy of Modern Song - Chapter ten is dedicated to Jesse James by Harry McClintock.

Trying to add the songs Dylan discusses to a compilation on my Tidal but they (Tidal) don't have this song in their library :(
