You're Breakin' My Heart
Harry Nilsson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart so fuck you

All I want to do is have a good time, now I'm blue
You won't boogaloo
Run down to Tramps, have a dance or two, ooh
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart but fuck you

You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart, boo-hoo

You stepped on my ass
You're breakin' my glasses too
You won't drive my car
Buy a lot of stuff
I've had enough of you, ooh
I'm goin' insane
There's no one to blame so fuck you

You can't have your way
There's nothing left to say
There's nothing left to do, ooh
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart so fuck you

You gotta have your way
There's nothing left to say
There's nothing left to do, ooh
You're breakin' my heart
You're tearing it apart but I love you

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

Overall Meaning

The song "You're Breakin' My Heart" by Harry Nilsson is a frustrated lamentation of a person who is fed up with their significant other's behavior. The lyrics openly express the singer's grudge with the object of their affection. The song starts with a hurtful accusation: "You're breakin' my heart/You're tearing it apart so fuck you." The singer feels that their heart is being ripped as they say that all they wanted to do was to have a good time, but "now I'm blue." The phrase "You won't boogaloo" means that the significant other refuses to dance, which the singer finds frustrating. The song continues as the singer lists the grievances with their significant other.

The singer sings about how their significant other won't drive their car or buy things, and the final verse is a much stronger expression than the previous ones: "You're breakin' my heart/ You're tearing it apart but I love you." In this paradoxical finale, the singer expresses their frustration and anger, but the final line shows that despite all the difficulties and problems, the love they have for this person still persists.

The song showcases a theme that is common in a lot of Nilsson's work: the common man's frustration with love and relationships. The straightforward lyrics and the catchy, upbeat melody made the song very popular. The song was written by Harry Nilsson himself and was released in 1972 as a single from the album Son of Schmilsson.

I too am 69 and have had this album as an LP when it came out, then on cassette, then on CD. Somehow I managed to duck the 8-track craze!

This song makes me smile each and every time I play it. Harry had such a comedic style in some of his music. This whole album is a gem. So sadly missed.

@buttkid3548

Always loved his sense of humor.

The Dark Lord Satan Harry used to party with Alice Cooper at the Rainbow Bar in Hollywood in the 70s. Their drinking club was called โ€œ The Hollywood Vampiresโ€ same as Aliceโ€™s second band. Alice was the president for the club as he was a severe alcoholic back then. Harry used to party for 3 day binges with Ringo Starr.
