Do The Right Thing
Hart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You had plenty money, 1922
You let other women make a fool of you
Why don't you do right (do right), like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

You're sitting down and wondering what it's all about
You ain't got no money, they will put you out
Why don't you do right (do right), like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

If you had prepared twenty years ago
You wouldn't be a-wanderin' now from door to door
Why don't you do right (do right), like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

I fell for your jivin' and I took you in
Now all you gots to offer me's a drink of gin
Why don't you do right (do right), like some other men do?
Get out of here and get me some money too

Why don't you do right (do right), like some other men do?
Like some other men do (do right)
Like some other men do
Ooh

Why don't you do right (do right)
Why, why, why don't you do right (do right)

Like some other men do? (do right)
Like some other men do?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Hart's song "Do the Right Thing" depicts a frustrated woman who is trying to get her man to do better in life. She speaks to him about his past, reminding him that he once had plenty of money in 1922, but allowed other women to take advantage of him. She urges him to "do right" like some other men who are able to provide for their women. She tells him that if he doesn't get his act together, he will be kicked out of their home due to his financial struggles. She then asks him why he can't do better and get her some money too.

The woman blames her man for his current situation, telling him that if he had prepared twenty years ago, he wouldn't be wandering from door to door in search of money. She laments that she fell for his lies and took him in despite his poor financial status, and all he has to offer her in return is a drink of gin. The woman reiterates that her man needs to do right like some other men do, but he doesn't seem to heed her advice.

Will Smith is a legend. I grew up watching fresh prince his movies and music probably the actor that most influenced me growing up but it was sad to see he lost his way somewhere in between, it's Hollywood who doesn't. Wish him all the best.
