Time Lapse
Harvest Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Inside the hourglass time is tumbling
Inside the hourglass rages a sandstorm
How come we didn't see the dust arise
How did we survive through turbid skies

In the looking-glass space is speeding
The looking-glass reflects a time-lapse
Why didn't we rewind to erase the pain
How did we walk through broken frames

How many nights do we have to stay here
And how many times do we have to try

Our time's like a burning candle
When it flickers in the dark
We're trying to catch a spark
We're still trying to brighten the flame

How many nights do we have to stay here
And how many times do we have to try
How many nights do we have to stay here
And how many times do we have to try and try

Fighting back the tears in our eyes
As we're finding out there's nowhere to hide

Hey, didn't we already think so
It's okay, we must try to let go

Overall Meaning

The song "Time Lapse" by Harvest is a contemplative piece that reflects on the passage of time, the struggles of life, and the need to let go of the past. The lyrics suggest a sense of confusion and helplessness as the singer questions how they managed to survive through difficult situations, asking "How come we didn't see the dust arise?" while acknowledging the pain and suffering they have experienced, wondering "Why didn't we rewind to erase the pain?". The hourglass and the looking-glass are both used as metaphors for the passage of time in the song, highlighting the temporal nature of our lives and the need to make the most of the time we have.

The repeated refrain of "How many nights do we have to stay here, and how many times do we have to try?" echoes the sense of frustration and uncertainty that underlies the song. The singer seems to be searching for answers, trying to find a way forward despite the challenges they face. The imagery of a burning candle and the struggle to keep the flame alive lends a sense of urgency to the song, as if time is running out and every moment counts.

Overall, "Time Lapse" is a poignant and reflective song that captures the sense of uncertainty, doubt, and longing that we all experience at some point in our lives. The lyrics are rich with symbolism and metaphor, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences of time and the challenges they have faced.

Typically we would harvest in a circle, start from the center of the field and work out - saves time instead of turning on so many corners/end. Also keep the tractor and grain wagon conveniently in the middle of the field to unload combines. Since, we've been harvesting back/forth since we use a different drill/planter that creates larger furrows, can be bouncy to go across, so we go with the grain!
