Once In A While
Harvey Milk Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Curiosity ain't what's killin' me. How many more lives to go? (Oh no)
And wouldn't you agree, about that famous tree if no one was around, it didn't fall?
I couldn't even care if someone had been there. When it fell and crushed that

Overall Meaning

person's house, it was a coincidence. Right?

The first two lines of the song are somewhat ambiguous, but they reflect the singer's pondering about how long he will live. He considers how many more lives he has to go and suggests that curiosity is not what is killing him. The next lines of the song discuss the concept of the famous tree falling down, and whether or not it would make a noise if there was nobody around to hear it. The singer seems to suggest that he doesn't care about the answer to this philosophical question, as he believes the fact that the tree fell and crushed a person's house was simply a coincidence.

In essence, the lyrics are about the fragility and randomness of life. The singer is considering his own mortality and the idea that life is full of chance events that can have enormous consequences.
