Hatfield released five albums, the first three on Virgin. The five albums are: 1973's eponymous effort, 1975's The Rotters' Club, 1980's now-deleted compilation Afters (of which the new bits have been tagged onto the end of The Rotters' Club CD), 2005's radio sessions/live compilation Hatwise Choice, and 2006's radio sessions/live compilation Hattitude,. The latter two are available only from Burning Shed. The group split in 1975 because of overwhelming indifference. It re-formed briefly in 1990, and again in 2005, with the possibility of new material being issued.
The name of the band was inspired by the road signage on the main A1 road heading north from London, where the a succession of signs referred to the first major town, and the overall direction, as 'A1 Hatfield & the North'. This style of sign from the 1970s has now been replaced by a slightly different variant.
In 2005/2006, the band released two archival collections, "Hatwise Choice" and "Hattitude", both featuring the classic Miller/Pyle/Sinclair/Stewart line-up.
Pip Pyle passed away 28th August 2006, Phil Miller passed away 18th October 2017.
Didn't Matter Anyway
Hatfield and the North Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We'll meet again some other day
Till then keep well
You'll be in my dreams
Goodnight, goodbye, bye for now...
The time has come to leave you
Please don't feel alone
There'll be a way to reach you and say
"Never mind..."
It didn't matter anyway
We'll meet again some other day
Till then keep well
You'll be in my dreams
Goodnight, goodbye, bye for now...
The lyrics to Hatfield and the North's song "Didn't Matter Anyway" convey a sense of bittersweet farewell between two individuals who have met briefly but are now parting ways. The phrase "it didn't matter anyway" suggests a resigned acceptance that their time together was brief but meaningful, and that they hold out hope of meeting again in the future. The song also suggests a desire to reassure the other person that they will not be forgotten, as expressed in the lyrics "you'll be in my dreams."
The mood of the song is understated and melancholic, with the final lines of "goodnight, goodbye, bye for now" emphasizing the sense of finality and the need to move on. The line "There'll be a way to reach you and say 'never mind...'" suggests a belief in the possibility of rekindling the connection between the two characters, but also acknowledges the challenges of distance and separation.
Overall, the lyrics to "Didn't Matter Anyway" reflect complex emotions and themes of connection and separation, love and loss, and the importance of cherishing even brief encounters with others.
