Twilight Time
Havalina Rail Co. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Around twilight time, I guess things turn blue
The lights in the sky are not yet on high
I can only be dreaming of you

And there's nothing that you can do
To avoid touching down
Won't you send me a crown that says in a way
I need you

So I try on a hat to forget where I'm at
I guess any old place will do
Rome will be fine, I've forgotten the time
As I reach for my dirty old shoe

And I guess in a way I've forgotten today
And I dreamt right through yesterday too
And this night comes alive as these darknesses rise
And at least the scenery's new

A million little windows, summer stars above
Would you find my window, and would you be singing of love
And even the moon has a dark side, with the Earth shining above

And the white side's bright because it lights up the night
And it points the way back to the one you love

Overall Meaning

The opening of Havalina Rail Co.'s song, "Twilight Time", describes a moment of contemplation in which the singer reflects on the deep blue of twilight and their inability to forget about someone. This person haunts their dreams and they long for a sign from them, even though they know that there is nothing they can do to alter their course of events. The second verse describes the singer's effort to disconnect from reality with the use of a hat, contemplating the simplicity of just about any place, particularly Rome, while providing details of messy footwear. The singer admits to being in a state of disconnection, failing to register yesterday or tonight, and feeling bewildered by the arrival of darkness.

However, the song eventually topples back into the dream landscape, where summer stars illuminate many little windows, while the moon becomes visible with one side shining bright and the other perpetually dark. The chorus transmits hope and brings music to the piece. It poses questions about love and the potential for it to endure the difficulties of life. Perhaps the moon can be likened to people's resilient souls, and in their desire for love, they aim for their bright side, which will illuminate it all with a gentle and comforting light.
