Having moved to the UK just a couple of years ago, the four-piece have assimilated quickly, becoming a part of their new country’s scene and taking shows at some of the Britain’s best-loved venues in their stride, including the likes of London’s Dublin Castle, and Manchester’s iconic Night & Day Cafe, as well as a notable slot on the Spirit of Burgas festival in Bulgaria supporting Kasabian. Their 2017 single “Always So Simple, Always So Cold” received strong support from BBC Introducing in Manchester and reached 13th spot in Spotify Top 50 UK Viral chart. In the autumns of 2018, Clash Magazine praised the band’s single “BLUE” calling it “an immediate, addictive track that also manages to retain its subtlety, a moody dancefloor burner with a killer chorus”.
Live shows mean nothing without the music to back it up however. Fortunately, Hayes & Y exhibit a strong chemistry and rich musicality that are manifest in their effortlessly sleek brand of pop. Taking their cues from ‘80s electronica as much as they do from contemporary indie, the four-piece have successfully crafted an aesthetic that feels both timely and timeless.

Can I be honest?
Nothing feels the way it did when we started
Oh no
You used to be harmless
No risk and no commitment
You used to be guarded
Baby, you've been at my place for seven nights and seven days
Lookin' pretty comfortable for someone who needs space
This ain't in my head 'cause you're in my bed
Say it, but I don't believe it, like you don't do feelings
Yeah, leave me, but I'll bet this ain't over yet
Tell me what the hell we're feeling if you don't do feelings
I know, I know you feel it
Don't say you don't do feelings, oh no
I know, I know you feel it
Don't say you don't do feelings
You're like a mood ring
Ever changing in the heat of things you've been doing
With me
You're good at confusing
I'm just as good at melting for how you been moving
On me
Baby, I've been waking up to holding you for seven days
You say no strings attached because I know you love a chase
This ain't in my head 'cause you're in my bed
Say it, but I don't believe it, like you don't do feelings
Yeah, leave me, but I'll bet this ain't over yet
Tell me what the hell we're feeling if you don't do feelings
I know, I know you feel it
Don't say you don't do feelings, oh no
I know, I know you feel it
Don't say you don't do feelings
This ain't in my head 'cause you're in my bed
Say it but I don't believe it
You don't do feelings
You leave me, but I'll bet this ain't over yet
Tell me what the hell we're feeling if you don't do feelings
I know, I know, I know you feel it
Don't say you don't do feelings
I know, I know, I know you feel it
Don't say you don't do feelings
In "The Feeling" by Hayes & Y, the lyrics express a sense of confusion and mixed signals in a romantic relationship. The singer begins by candidly expressing that things have changed in their relationship and that the initial excitement and innocence is no longer present. The line "You used to be harmless" suggests that the other person was once more cautious and guarded with their emotions, but this seems to no longer be the case.
The singer then confronts the other person's contradictory behavior. Despite claiming to need space, the person has been staying at the singer's place for seven consecutive nights and days, indicating a desire for closeness and physical intimacy. The repeated phrase "This ain't in my head 'cause you're in my bed" highlights the conflicting messages and the singer's difficulty in believing the lack of emotional involvement from the other person. The line "like you don't do feelings" underscores the belief that the other person suppresses or denies their emotions.
The chorus emphasizes the singer's firm belief that the other person does indeed experience emotions, despite their claims to the contrary. The comparison of the other person to a "mood ring" suggests that their feelings and behaviors are unpredictable and ever-changing, adding to the confusion. The singer admits that they are also susceptible to being affected by the other person's actions and finds it challenging to resist their allure.
The bridge further emphasizes the singer's frustration with the situation. They have been waking up next to the other person for seven days, which implies a deeper connection and intimacy than the other person's words suggest. The line "no strings attached because I know you love a chase" hints at the other person's tendency to enjoy pursuing and playing with emotions, further complicating the singer's understanding of the relationship.
Overall, "The Feeling" explores the complexities of a relationship where one person claims not to have or express emotions while their actions and the singer's own observations suggest otherwise. It captures the confusion, longing, and frustration that can arise when emotions and intentions are not clearly communicated or understood.
