The Water Is Wide
Hayley Westenra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O Waly, waly, (a lament "woe is me") up the bank,
And waly, waly, doun the brae (hill),
And waly, waly, yon burn-side (riverside),
Where I and my Love wont to gae (go)!
I lean'd my back unto an aik (oak),
I thocht it was a trustie tree,
But first it bow'd and syne (soon) it brak (broke)
Sae my true love did lichtlie (lightly) me.

O waly, waly, gin love be bonnie (beautiful),
A little time while it is new!
But when 'tis auld (old) it waxeth cauld (cold),
And fades awa' like morning dew.
O wherefore should I busk my heid (adorn my head),
Or wherefore should I kame (comb) my hair?
For my true Love has me forsook,
And says he'll never lo'e me mair (more).

Now Arthur's Seat
Sall (shall) be my bed (burial place),
The sheets sall ne'er be 'filed by me
Saint Anton's well sall be my drink
Since my true Love has forsaken me.
Marti'mas wind, when wilt thou blaw (blow),
And shake the green leaves aff the tree?
O gentle Death, when wilt thou come?
For of my life I am wearing

'Tis not the frost, that freezes fell,
Nor blawing snaw's (snow) inclemencie,
'Tis not sic cauld (such cold) that makes me cry;
But my Love's heart grown cauld to me.
When we cam in by Glasgow toun,
We were a comely sicht (sight)to see,
My Love was clad in the black velvet,
And I mysel in cramasie (crimson).

But had I wist (known), before I kist (a coffin died),
That love had been sae ill to win,
I had lock'd my heart in a case o' gowd (gold),
And pinn'd it wi' a siller (silver) pin.
And O! if my young babe were born,
And set upon the nurse's knee

And I mysel were dead and gane,
And the green grass growing over me!

Overall Meaning

The Water Is Wide is a Scottish folk song, which has been covered by many artists and is often referred to as a lament. The song, in essence, is about the end of a love affair, and the singer's deep sense of despair and unrequited love. The use of the word 'waly', which is a Scottish term for lamentation, emphasizes the sorrowful and mournful nature of the song.

The lyrics describe the search for one's true love, and the singer's heartbreak at being left alone. The metaphor of the tree is often used in literature to symbolize stability and strength; however, in this song, the tree (representing love) fails the singer, leaving her feeling betrayed and deserted. The song also acknowledges the fickle nature of love, that it can be beautiful in the beginning but can turn cold and distant over time.

Interestingly, the third verse of the song references Arthur's Seat, a hill in Edinburgh which is often associated with Scottish folklore and legends. Saint Anton's well, also mentioned in the song, is a natural spring in Edinburgh, which was once believed to have healing properties. These references suggest that the song is deeply rooted in Scottish culture and tradition.

O Waly, waly, up the bank,
Woe is me, up the bank of the river,

And waly, waly, doun the brae,
And woe is me, down the hill,

And waly, waly, yon burn-side,
And woe is me, by the riverside,

Where I and my Love wont to gae!
Where my love and I used to go!

I lean'd my back unto an aik,
I leaned my back against an oak,

I thocht it was a trustie tree;
I thought it was a trustworthy tree;

But first it bow'd and syne it brak,
But first it bowed and then it broke,

Sae my true love did lichtlie me.
So my true love lightly (easily) rejected me.

O waly, waly, gin love be bonnie,
Woe is me, if love is beautiful,

A little time while it is new!
It does not last long when it is new!

But when 'tis auld it waxeth cauld,
But when it grows old, it becomes cold,

And fades awa' like morning dew.
And fades away like the morning dew.

O wherefore should I busk my heid,
Why should I adorn my head,

Or wherefore should I kame my hair?
Or why should I comb my hair?

For my true Love has me forsook,
For my true love has abandoned me,

And says he'll never lo'e me mair.
And says he will never love me again.

Now Arthur's Seat
Now Arthur's Seat (a hill in Edinburgh)

Sall be my bed,
Shall be my burial place,

The sheets sall ne'er be 'filed by me,
The sheets shall never be soiled by me,

Saint Anton's well sall be my drink
I shall drink from Saint Anton's well,

Since my true Love has forsaken me.
Since my true love has abandoned me.

Marti'mas wind, when wilt thou blaw,
Martinmas wind, when will you blow,

And shake the green leaves aff the tree?
And shake the green leaves off the tree?

O gentle Death, when wilt thou come?
Oh gentle Death, when will you come?

For of my life I am wearing.
For I am weary of my life.

'Tis not the frost, that freezes fell,
It's not the intense cold that freezes me,

Nor blawing snaw's inclemencie,
Nor the harshness of blowing snow,

'Tis not sic cauld that makes me cry;
It's not such cold that makes me cry;

But my Love's heart grown cauld to me.
But rather my love's heart has grown cold towards me.

When we cam in by Glasgow toun,
When we came into Glasgow town,

We were a comely sicht tho,
We were a sight to behold,

My Love was clad in the black velvet,
My love wore black velvet,

And I mysel in cramasie.
And I myself in crimson.

But had I wist, before I kist
But if I had known, before I kissed

That love had been sae ill to win,
That love would be so difficult to obtain,

I had lock'd my heart in a case o' gowd,
I would have locked my heart in a golden case,

And pinn'd it wi' a siller pin;
And pinned it with a silver pin;

And O! if my young babe were born,
Oh, if my young babe were born,

And set upon the nurse's knee,
And placed upon the nurse's lap,

And I mysel were dead and gane,
And if I myself were dead and gone,

And the green grass growing over me!
And the green grass growing over me!

The water's wide, I cannot get over
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that'll carry two
And both shall row, my love and I

Where love is planted oh there it grows
It grows and blossoms like a rose
It has a sweet and pleasant smell
No flower on earth can it excel

The ship there is and she sails the sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as the love I'm in
I know not if I sink or swim

Oh, love is gentle, love is kind
The sweetest flower when first it's new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like morning dew

Doctors should prescribe listening to Hayley sing this song every day to lower blood pressure. So lovely and soothing. Beautiful

@rickenman9844

Ed King stay clear of Benedictus then, that song make your blood pressure rise to near-fatal levels

@Rick Enman 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

@TotalPirateLuvva

This brings back memories of all my hours virtual scuba diving on the Wii, with Hayley's hauntingly beautiful voice setting the mood. Endless Ocean is a beautiful game which, in all honesty, is probably what drove me to try real scuba (best decision I ever made). And I think Hayley Westenra's talent really brought it all together.

@CarlosAshglade

Me too.

@CarlosAshglade

Cooper Knight Though, I didn't go for the scuba diving part. But rather I went for the music part.

@surina.

this is the one song I ALWAYS listened to, drove my brother crazy XD
it was especially beautiful when the dolphins called as well. Too bad I could never get past the Atoll...

@josephm.4480

Ivy Kowalis the second game, Endless Ocean: Blue World (which is not only better than the first, but is easily the best game I have ever played) honestly helped me realize I could go into biology as a career. I've always been into it, but the Endless Ocean games really progressed that decision (granted I'm still a teenager but it's good knowing what I'd like to do)

@TotalPirateLuvva

Yeah, Endless Ocean is what got me interested in scuba, and probably a big part of why I'm as interested as I am in marine biology. I agree that Blue World is better than the original, probably one of the best games if not the best I've ever played. The only thing I prefer about the original is the soundtrack
