Wuthering Heights
Hayley Westenra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out on the wiley, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green.
You had a temper like my jealousy:
Too hot, too greedy.
How could you leave me,
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you. I loved you, too.
Bad dreams in the night.
They told me I was going to lose the fight,
Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
Wuthering Heights.

Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Ooh, it gets dark! It gets lonely,
On the other side from you.
I pine a lot. I find the lot
Falls through without you.
I'm coming back, love.
Cruel Heathcliff, my one dream,
My only master.

Too long I roam in the night.
I'm coming back to his side, to put it right.
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering,
Wuthering Heights,

Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Ooh! Let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
Ooh! Let me have it.
Let me grab your soul away.
You know it's me--Cathy!

Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!
Let me in-a-your window.

Heathcliff, it's me--Cathy.
Come home. I'm so cold!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Hayley Westenra's song "Wuthering Heights" are inspired by Emily Bronte's novel of the same name. The singer of the song is Cathy, who is calling out to Heathcliff, her lover who has left her. The initial verses describe their time together on the moors, where they used to play and act reckless. However, their passionate and possessive love for each other has led to a bitter end, and Cathy is haunted by bad dreams about losing the fight for their relationship.

The chorus mainly calls out to Heathcliff to come back and let her in. Cathy describes how lonely and dark it gets without Heathcliff, and how everything falls apart without him. She is coming back to put things right and reconcile with him, but she also acknowledges that Heathcliff's cruelty has always been a part of their relationship. The final verse is the most intense, as Cathy pleads for Heathcliff to let her have his soul and acknowledge that it is indeed her calling out to him.

The song is a beautiful representation of Cathy and Heathcliff's tumultuous relationship from the novel, showcasing their passion, devotion, and destructive tendencies towards one another. The haunting melody and Westenra's delicate vocals perfectly capture the melancholic undertones of the lyrics.

It’s really not that hard - I’m a singer with decades of professional experience. This rendition was not great.

Wow. I never imagined that this song could be sung by anyone other than Kate Bush, I was wrong.

@Fabulous Finds Pat Benatar’s version is the definitive one - even better than Kate Bush’s original. This one is absolutely dreadful.

Gostei dessa moça cantando essa música. Me transmite mais naturalidade que Kate Bush. Sinto que a agudo dessa última agride um pouco os ouvidos.
