Hayley Westenra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Away, you rollin' river
O Shenandoah, I long to hear you.
Away I'm bound to go
'Cross the wide Missouri.
'Tis seven long years since I last saw you
Away, you rollin' river
'Tis seven long years since last I saw you
'Cross the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you
Away, you rollin' river.
O Shenandoah, I'll not deceive you,
Away I'm bound to go
'Cross the wide Missouri.
The lyrics of Hayley Westenra's song, "Shenandoah", express a deep, heartfelt longing for a place that is deeply personal to the singer. Shenandoah is a river in Virginia, USA, and the song is a tribute to the beautiful, natural landscapes of the area. The lyrics evoke a sense of melancholy, as the singer longs to return to this place that she has not seen in seven long years. She speaks directly to the river, as though it were a living, breathing part of her past, something that she desperately needs to reconnect with.
The lyrics also reveal a sense of duty or obligation, as the singer states that she is "bound to go 'cross the wide Missouri". There is a sense that this is something that she must do, even though it is difficult for her to leave Shenandoah behind. The repetition of the phrases "Away, you rollin' river" and "Away I'm bound to go" further emphasize the sense of detachment and separation that the singer feels.
