It starts off with still-life vignettes of her home life as we learn that she talks to her dog and her house "smells like citrus and cinnamon."

Throughout the song, Williams keeps singing about how wonderful it is to be alone. Near the end, she warns a love interest that if he came to stay, he would never want to leave her homely residence.

Warren Fu directed the song's disturbing video. The clip depicts Williams relaxing at home when floral-patterned and wooden interiors come alive and start chasing her. it ends with Williams dancing with the creatures in a display of emotional liberation. "Her eyes snap open again, and she's almost unrecognizable from her former self," Fu explained to MTV News. "After the long build-up of pain and struggle, this is the release, the payoff."

The visual continues the storyline of Williams' previous two visuals for "Simmer" and "Leave It Alone," both also directed by Fu. The director shot the video trilogy over the course of three days during a cold winter weekend in Tennessee.
The song started with a swing beat Williams played on a mini drum kit in producer Taylor York's studio. She embellished the beat by turning it into a new jack swing tune.

Williams then found an old lyric she'd written for an acoustic guitar song that referenced her move to an empty cottage after splitting from her husband, New Found Glory guitarist Chad Gilbert. "It talked about a vision of my house when I first moved in and the walls were bare," she explained to Pitchfork. "Moving through my home felt like a new discovery all the time. I was discovering myself, really."

The track took on a new meaning as Williams moved on from her broken marriage and her new home took shape. "I'm very much living this song most authentically right now," she explained. "Having come from a relationship that was not healthy for many years, it was a big relief for me to wake up alone and be able to decide for myself what a morning in my house looks like. Every morning had this smell to it that was like lemon and hot water and herbs."

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of ‘Cinnamon’ by Hayley Williams depict a sense of loneliness and isolation. She describes the signs that point to her being alone on the walls of her home. She also talks about how she keeps every light on and talks to her dog. However, this does not seem to bother her as she seemingly enjoys her own company. As a musician stand point, the music really follws through with the video as well. In the beginning, its very distored, and actually sort of hard to listen for a good rhythm/pattern. Which is odd, especially since that was the majority of the song. The only place where it was somewhat on time/ had a proper rhythm was when the dog was shown. However, when she reached the tub scene it was totally different. The music instead comes together sort of like ber come together with her demons and in actuality the music instead of having dark undertones like tbe beginning has a funk-pop sound. Probably meaning that although she still has that melody of darkness, she is capable to cope and be happy.

I think I found an easter egg. There's a picture of an elephant with the rider on his back (0:40, 3:27). It's the only picture among all those empty frames on the walls. I think it could be a nod to the Sudden Desire lyric "Take the elephant by the hand and hold it/it's cruel to tame a thing that don't know its strength". I googled "elephant and rider" and found about a theory from psychologist Jonathan Haidt about two parts of the psyche: the Elephant is instinct, strong and impulsive, the Rider is the rational part and they need to cooperate to live well.

It's crazy to think this is the same edgy punk rock girl that wrote legendary albums like Riot! all those years ago! This, to me is a representation of running away from your shadows and when you can't run anymore, facing them, feeling them and realizing they're fragmented versions of yourself, seeking wholeness with you. And this is all going on inside of her mind and body, consciousness . It feels as though you're running away from the fears until you can't run anymore and have to face them. But then you coming out strong and on top and fully, lovingly in your own presence with ease.

In her interview with Zane, she specifically talks about trying to be more in touch with her feminine side. That she has always been aware of and accepts her masculine but has struggled with accepting her feminine nature. Because it can be "dirty," or "disgusting" but also "beautiful." She said the feminine side of her being is "natural" nature. So, clay, mud, spice, floral, tree bark, re-birth, etc. All things that aren't really looked at or appreciated for their beauty, but are still beautiful none the less. She also went into detail about going home and having a completely empty house, aside from lawn chairs and a mattress. (empty picture frames on the walls in this video). Also, how her dog, is the reason she chose to stay alive. Because he is always there for her, she could never willingly leave him. I feel like this video is in direct reflection with some of the inner struggles she expressed in that interview. And I'm here to say. HELL YES GIRL you are cinnamon. Sugar, spice and every thing nice. I feel like all of the sides dancing together, choreographed is a good note on her own duality. Everyone has multiple "edges"? to their personality. She is finally trying to rationalize and accept her own differences. It is fucking beautiful, and authentic and something I think that every one on earth has struggled with at some point in their life.

She is learning how to nurture, her own nature.
No worries Hayley. You aren't alone in the literal sense. Your choices are yours and yours alone.
But the fans, family, band mates, are all here with you.

Being afraid of yourself, your demons and depression because that isn’t you, it’s something triggered that you’re now suffering from by the trauma of something like a break up.
A way that I coped with depression is practicing acceptance. I feel like this is what this video is about. Embracing your sadness instead of being weakened by it.

So, I'm confused. To me it seems like Cinnamon is like an alter ego for her, and I could be wrong, that's just what I got from it. But if that is the case, is Cinnamon good, or bad (like say Tyler Joseph's Blurryface? That was in my mind once she started dancing with the weird people things)? Because once I read comments talking about how cinnamon sounds like "sin I'm in" I totally agreed with that. So "if if I let you in, Cinnamon/sin I'm in". I'm not getting it...
(Also, I'm a complete twenty one pilots nerd, so yeah, I associate them with things probably very irrelevant, but this trilogy of songs reminded me of the trilogy they had, that started with the world being seen for the first time, the second developing the plot a lot and seeing a bit more of the world and what's going on, and the third/ending being about kind of celebrating the freedom. But in both of the closers it kind of end weird, where Tyler gets dragged back to Dema, and here we see Hayley just stare into the camara like its not over. Neither story is over. But idk. I just thought that was interesting.)
