Shame
Hayward Justin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everywhere I go, I see our shame
Everywhere I go, all I can see is pain
I see it on the pavements, it's lying in the streets
I see it on the faces of the people, I don't meet

And everywhere I go, I hear the sound
Crying in my head, it just goes round and round
I hear it on the airwaves, it's coming down the wire
It's starting to consume us like a fire

But I'm only dreaming, as you can see
I don't expect, that you should follow me
The road is lonely, I don't complain
It's such a shame

Everywhere I go, I feel the love
Washing over me, I just can't get enough
I hear it in the music, that's coming down through me
I know there's love between us, if we only set it free

And everywhere I go, I feel the joy
Hold it in your heart, don't let it be destroyed
'cause all we need is freedom, and all we ask is peace
All we ask is no one on their knees

But I'm only dreaming, as you can see
I don't expect, that you should follow me
The road is lonely, I don't complain
But it's such a shame

'cause all we need is freedom, all we ask is peace
All we ask is no one on their knees

But I'm only dreaming, as you can see
I don't expect, that you should follow me
The road is lonely, I don't complain
But it's such a shame

It's such a shame
The road is lonely, I don't complain
But it's such a shame

Hey, it's such a shame
I'm only dreaming

I'm only dreaming
Hey, it's such a shame

Overall Meaning

In "Shame," Justin Hayward expresses the pain that he observes in the world around him. The lyric "Everywhere I go, I see our shame" speaks to the feeling of being constantly confronted with the suffering and challenges that people experience. He notes that he sees pain and shame "on the pavements," "in the faces of the people," and that it is "starting to consume us like a fire." Hayward also recognizes that he may be idealizing a better world, singing "But I'm only dreaming, as you can see," but still holds out hope for love, joy, freedom, and peace.

Throughout the song, Hayward emphasizes the importance of not losing sight of these positive emotions and the need to work towards them. He notes the importance of love and the musical connection that it can create, singing "I hear it in the music, that's coming down through me." He highlights the need to protect love and joy in the line, "Hold it in your heart, don't let it be destroyed," and calls for freedom and peace for all.

The final lines of the song emphasize Hayward's position as a lone individual while still acknowledging the importance of fighting for a better world. He acknowledges the difficulties of the path, stating, "The road is lonely, I don't complain," while still acknowledging that the pain and struggle he witnesses every day is "such a shame."

Such a song of truth.  As a Christian I have felt the very things Justin talks about. What a song to listen too! So true, & beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Margaret Hume The pictures are shocking of people having to beg when we we've come a such a long way from landing astronauts on the moon, but we are still trying to feed the poor and help the disadvantaged. As a Christian it upsets me because their plight seems so hopeless, but there is some optimism that in Jesus Christ that soon God will display His glory and many souls will be saved. Thank you Moody Jill for your moving pictures.

The visuals you displayed are heart wrenching.  If only such pain could be erased what a wonderful world this would be.  Justin's right, "It's such a Shame."  I wanted to say something to inspire your artistic points of view, plus say something current.  Thanks again, Moody Jill.
