Circles
Head Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I needed to start running away
We're no good, it's me I'm trying to save
Treading water we're just numbing the pain
Spinning round as we circle the drain
Pick the pieces up and turn it around
I bring the hammer down

Walk out

Somehow I couldn't say to you, the things to make it right
The words just came out wrong and then we'd end up in a fight
'Cause I guess I fucked up, messed this luck up
And I blame myself
But man, I gotta let it go
Take a shot and let it roll
Then I can almost clear my head
'Til I'm alone laying in bed
Thinking
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away

I needed to start running away
We're no good, it's me I'm trying to save
Treading water we're just numbing the pain
Spinning round as we circle the drain
Pick the pieces up and turn it around
I bring the hammer down

Walk out
Oh

Between the cocaine and the lies
The truth and alibis
Excuses don't mean anything when tears run down our eyes
All I do is remember, last September
Sitting in your car
And hearing "Man, I gotta go"
And I wish it wasn't so
But we were circling the drain
But we were circling the drain
Just can't change
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away

I needed to start running away
We're no good, it's me I'm trying to save
Treading water we're just numbing the pain
Spinning round as we circle the drain
Pick the pieces up and turn it around
I bring the hammer

Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away from me
Get the fuck away, come on

I needed to start running away
We're no good, it's me I'm trying to save
Treading water we're just numbing the pain
Spinning round as we circle the drain

We needed to start running away
We're no good, we were just trying to save
Treading water we're just numbing the pain
Spinning round as we circle the drain
Pick the pieces up and turn it around

And bring the hammer down
Bring the hammer down

Overall Meaning

The song Circles by Head talks about the pursuit of something and the fear of nothing. The lyrics suggest that there is an unexplained force that drives people to keep moving, like a circle that keeps turning. The first verse highlights the constant chase for something, which is undefined and unknown. The singer questions if anyone knows what this something is. Meanwhile, the second verse suggests that love is easily forgotten, emphasizing the common fear of getting close to someone and being let down.

The chorus mentions the constant cycle of life- the rise and fall that turn the wheel- and how it is ultimately just a circle. The singer seems to contemplate whether all the effort put into chasing and running away is worth it, and whether we should instead focus on the present moment, where there is no fear, no struggle, just "nothing."

The song seems to convey a message of self-reflection, reminding the listeners of the importance of being present and appreciating what we have now. It also highlights the illusion of chasing after things that seem intangible and recognizing that it is all just a cycle.

While the neck will afford you the ability to move in this direction, the question is what is one trying to accomplish? There are much more desirable ways to move the neck if one is looking to stretch or to maintain motion. Take a look at the Spurling's maneuver as I think it will help you better understand why I advise again doing them as a regular routine. Happy New Year!

Neck circles are a great way to aggravate the neck. As a physical therapist, one of the first things I address with any of my patients with cervical pathology is to absolutely make sure they eliminate neck circles. I would encourage you to look at the Spurling's maneuver which is a commonly used orthopedic test and look how much neck circles resemble this maneuver. I would strongly recommend that you take a look at Judy Alter's book entitle Surviving Exercise too, esp because it's less than $1
