This band had Doug Roberson & Jim Viner from Iowa City, Iowa, who are the current guitarist and drummer, respectively, for The Diplomats of Solid Sound as well as Mike Sangster who came from the Des Moines-based band The Hollowmen who had a couple of records out in the late 80’s. Dubuque, Iowa native JIm Vallet, whose current project is entitled Track a Tiger (Chicago), rounded out the line-up on bass. This band was praised for its use of layered guitars and unique tunings. The resulting album Starcaster (released 1991) is an album still considered to be one of the better efforts of this period and area. At the time there was a lot of speculation that Iowa City was going to blow up like another Athens or Seattle given the shear number of bands the area had to offer. Head Candy also had a video shown on MTV’s 120 Minutes.

Overall Meaning

The song "Maggie May" by Head Candy is about a relationship that has gone bad. The singer, who is speaking to Maggie, is trying to get her to wake up and listen to what he has to say. He is tired of being used and led away from his home. He is hurt because he feels that Maggie has stolen his heart and soul. In the beginning, he talks about how he should be back at school and that he knows he keeps Maggie entertained, but he feels he is being used. He couldn't have tried any more, but the pain he feels is that Maggie led him away from his home just to save her from being alone, and he feels like he was just being used.

The singer goes on to say that he thinks that Maggie is getting older, but that doesn't worry him because in his eyes, she is still everything. He loved her jokes and didn't need to be coaxed into loving her. The problem was that all he needed was a friend to guide him, but Maggie turned into a lover, and what a lover she was. She wore him out, wrecked his bed, and kicked him in the head the next morning. But still, he loved her, and he would follow her anywhere.
