Love Me Tonight
Head East Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drive two hundred miles
To a place I've never seen
One more bar, back to the car
And I'm gone before I even know where I've been - yeah

Now I don't know where you come from
I'll probably never see your face again
It really don't matter what your name is
But it's so nice to make another friend

But I don't know where you've been
And I don't know who you've had in
But I know you've got exactly what I need
It don't mean too much to me
What you do or who you see
I'll be leavin' here at three
So love me tonight

Well I've been gone a long time
I really haven't been any place at all
Two more days the same old way
Well it really doesn't matter at all - no

But you could make a difference
In the way I feel today
We'll have some fun, but I gotta run
If I'm gonna live I gotta play

But I don't know where you've been
And I don't know who you've had in
But I know you've got exactly what I need
It don't mean too much to me
What you do or who you see
I'll be leavin' here at three
So love me tonight

Love me tonight, don't talk about tomorrow
Love me tonight, don't feed me any sorrow
One night's all we got and then I'm gone yeah
Love me tonight, don't ever try to stop it
Love me tonight, I'll be gone before you know it
Maybe I'll be back before too long

Love me tonight, don't talk about tomorrow
Love me tonight, don't feed me any sorrow
One night's all we got and then I'm gone yeah
Love me tonight, don't ever try to stop it
Love me tonight, I'll be gone before you know it
Maybe I'll be back before too long

But I don't know where you've been
And I don't know who you've had in
But I know you've got exactly what I need
It don't mean too much to me
What you do or who you see
I'll be leavin' here at three
So love me tonight

I believe in you and me
So love me tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Head East's "Love Me Tonight" describe a brief, passionate encounter between two strangers. The singer describes driving 200 miles to an unfamiliar place and meeting a woman at a bar. Despite the fact that he knows nothing about her and will likely never see her again, he is drawn to her and wants to spend the night with her. He acknowledges that she has likely had other partners, but it doesn't matter to him as he believes that she can provide exactly what he needs in the moment. The singer is not interested in discussing the future or any emotional attachments - he simply wants to enjoy the night and leave before anyone can get hurt.

The lyrics convey a sense of restlessness and a desire for escape. The singer has been "gone a long time" and hasn't found what he's looking for. The woman represents a temporary distraction from his problems, and the singer is willing to take a chance on a one-night stand in the hope of feeling more alive. The line "If I'm gonna live I gotta play" suggests that he feels as though he's been stagnating, and that this encounter is a necessary step in order for him to move forward.

Overall, "Love Me Tonight" is a song about seizing the day and taking risks in pursuit of excitement and fulfillment. The lyrics suggest a sense of urgency and a willingness to pursue pleasure regardless of the risks involved.

I saw Head East open up for Molly Hatchet and what a great show, they really energized the crowd and everyone was thoroughly digging it. It was my 2nd or 3rd concert I ever went to around 1980 or 81. Will always remember it...great times!!

I saw Head East open for Molly Hatchet in OKC in the early 80s.

The summer of 2018 they played in my hometown festival. Port Washington WI Fish Day, the world's largest one day Fish Fry. It was awesome, they played it like it was the super bowl. Everyone got to meet all the band members. Some little girl got the drummers drum sticks. The lead singer took someone's phone and sung into it on stage. Before that day I didn't know "Head East", after that, I can't ever forget them.

My cover band used to play this song. It was one of the most fun songs to play. John Schlitt is still performing at age 72 and sounds as good as ever.

A lost classic from the 70s... a wonderful song and beautifully played.

I saw these guys just last night and i was blown away by the musicianship. Great band but i wish they would get the respect they deserve. The crowd was small but very appreciative. I got to talk to the band members after the show and they were extremely friendly and engaging. I have seen them in the past and will continue going to see them as long as they still have the desire to please their audience.

I had not heard Head East until I saw them on tour with Ted Nugent and Robin Trower. Wow! Been a fan ever since !
