Flat as a Pancake would remain their most popular album spawning two charting singles, the well-known anthem "Never Been Any Reason" and "Love Me tonight", both written by guitarist Mike Somerville.
This lineup of John Schlitt (vocals), Mike Somerville (guitars), Roger Boyd (keyboards), Dan Birney (bass) and Steve Huston (drums) would last through four more studio albums and a double-LP live album when in 1980 Schlitt, Birney and Somerville left the band although Somerville would return for 1994 through 2003. By the mid-80’s, John Schlitt, had joined Petra, a christian rock band when lead singer Greg X. Volz left the band.
Roger Boyd took over leadership of the band for one mildly successful album, U.S. 1, and two more studio albums before the band became an oldies act

A glimpse of future days I cannot see
Shining like a morning star exquisite jewel I see afar
Aloft in heaven's heights so far from me
Sands of time won't you give some sign to let me know if it's me
For the days have passed and I've come at last to really see
That the sands of time have just left me blind to future dreams that I see
Watching as the days go by, the fall is gone and winter nigh
The nights are cold and lonely without you
Shining like a morning star exquisite jewel I see afar
Aloft in heaven's height so far from me
[Chorus]
Gazing through the sands of time, I'm wondering if you'll be mine
A glimpse of future days I cannot see
Shining like a morning star, exquisite jewel I see afar
Aloft in heaven's height so far from me
Watching as the days go by, the fall is gone and winter nigh
The nights are cold and lonely without you
Shining like a morning star exquisite jewel I see afar
Aloft in heaven's height so far from me
[Chorus]
That the sands of time have just left me blind
To future dreams that I see
Must I fade away into yesterday
Never set free
The lyrics of Head East's song Sands Of Time are about a person who is reflecting on their past and wondering if they will ever find love. They are looking into the future but cannot see what lies ahead, and they are hoping for a sign to let them know if they will find love or not. The reference to the "sands of time" symbolizes the passage of time and how it can be a barrier to the future. Throughout the song, the singer is longing for the person they love who shines like a "morning star" and is an "exquisite jewel" in their eyes. They feel distant from this person, as they are "aloft in heaven's heights so far from me."
As the days go by, the singer realizes that they are growing older and time is slipping away from them. They are feeling alone and cold without the person they love, and they are wondering if they will ever find happiness. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the theme of longing and uncertainty, as the singer gazes into the "sands of time" and wonders if they will ever find love or be set free from their past.
Overall, the lyrics to Sands Of Time are a poignant exploration of the human experience of longing for love and companionship, and the uncertainty that comes with looking to the future.
