Everybody Needs A Fence To Lean On

Can't quite put my mind at ease
'cause I need to see, see an opening
Take my arms in and bring
Bring it together, make it warmer
All for me
Lookin' for the sun in England
'cause everybody's got their enemies
And everybody needs a fence to lean on
Remember how the hospitals were vacant
'cause everybody's got their enemies
Everybody's got their enemies
Everybody's got their enemies
Everybody's got their enemies
I am watching, guarding the moments
They are leaving like all of you
You're looking at nothin'
And walking through darkness
Today could be the same for me too
'cause everybody's got their enemies
Everybody's got their enemies
Everybody's got their enemies
Everybody's got their enemies
I am watching, guarding the moments
They are leaving like all of you
You're looking at nothing
Walking through darkness
Today could be the same for me too
In "Everybody Needs a Fence to Lean On," Headlights explores the universal human experience of seeking comfort and protection from the difficulties of life. The song opens with the singer feeling unsettled and searching for something that will put their mind at ease. The repetition of the word "looking" emphasizes the singer's feeling of being lost and searching for direction. They need to find an opening or something to hold onto that will bring them warmth and security.
The chorus asserts that everyone has enemies and needs a fence to lean on. This fence symbolizes a physical or emotional barrier that separates us from danger, both real and imagined. The singer implores us to remember a time when hospitals were vacant, a subtle nod to the current pandemic and our collective need for protection. The repetition of "everybody's got their enemies" reinforces that we all have struggles, and we are not alone in our search for safety and stability.
In the second verse, the singer is watching and guarding the moments that are slipping away. They see others walking through darkness and feel a sense of vulnerability themselves. The repetition of the word "nothing" emphasizes the singer's feeling of emptiness and lack of purpose. Today could be the same for anyone, highlighting the unpredictability and instability of life.
Overall, "Everybody Needs a Fence to Lean On" is a poignant and relatable song that acknowledges the human need for protection and comfort in our challenging world.
