On April 2
Headlights Lyrics

They chose to leave on April 2
It's strange to me and strange to you
We thought better
The windowsills they frame your view
And your friends have their opinions too
I'm sure they'll pass them onto you
For good measure
And you change just like the day to night
It's calm outside
We're waiting for you
Pass the road that takes us home
No farther than you normally go
Cross the bridge it seems they're all alone for no reason
And I can feel the winter air
Outside the buildings seem to glare
Their light upon my face now I can feel it
Change just like the day to night
I stand outside waiting
Change just like the day to night
I'll stand outside waiting
Oh, how they day will pass
The time will seem to last and last
But the day will pass
The day will pass
The day will pass on by
on by
The lyrics to Headlights' song "On April 2" evoke feelings of confusion, change, and the passing of time. The song begins with the decision to leave on a particular day despite the inclement weather. The choice seems inexplicable and strange, leaving the listener to wonder why one would actively choose to face difficulties rather than approaching things with caution. The song progresses to describe the viewpoint of the singer, who is on the outside looking in at a friend's life. The windowsills frame the friend's view, and their friends have their opinions, but ultimately the friend will make a decision regardless of what others think.
The chorus describes change, comparing it to the transition from day to night. It's a constant in life, and one that we can't stop or control. The bridge seems like a symbol of the friend's journey, and the loneliness of the crossing is also puzzling. The singer is left waiting, perhaps for the friend to return to their old ways or to face the consequences of their decision.
The final lines of the song explore the passing of time and how it can seem interminable when we're looking forward to something. The day will pass, eventually, but it will feel like it lasts forever. This is reminiscent of the momentous decisions we sometimes make in our lives, where time seems to stand still while we wait for the outcome.
