These late period songs have always seemed to me like they may have been some of the most personally spritually resonant for Ayler, but the musicians and the culture of the late 1960s were possibly not able to successfully translate and perform his concept of spirituality, free jazz, boogaloo, nursery rhythms, marching bands, blues and r'n'b, and certainly the free-jazz following public was not ready to accept it.

When you're old like me, memories are long and nostalgia is that well worn overcoat you leave in a crumpled heap inside the wardrobe. But every now and again when the temptation is too tempting, you pick up that overcoat, dust it off and instantly you're transported back in time.
And we find ourselves in 1971. I'm a 15 year old pimply faced schoolboy who's just discovered Australian progressive rock bands and can't quite believe how lucky I am.
There were some bands and tunes that just stick with you like glue from that galaxy so, so long ago. Like Healing Force and the song Golden Miles. The screaming vocals of bass player Charlie Tumahai, keyboard player Mal Logan's incredible melodic riff and Lindsay Well's lyrics for a song that is an Australian classic. Well to me it is.
Mal Logan had to borrow keyboards from Warren Pig Morgan but it was no impediment to creating what many Australian music critics believe was our finest hour.
Sadly, Charlie is no longer with us but his vocals will always be.

Hi GMs fans, better throw my bib in after all this time. It was definitely Charlie who played bass on GMs and everything else we did and John Pugh had just rejoined the band after the recording was released and it's a shame we broke up before his talents as a player and singer were made available to the band and public. The main reason we broke up was we were worn out from relentless touring and barely making enough to live. The scoundrel who bought the record company ripped us off and offererd no opportunity to record an album and as I wrote all of the originals we played to that point it still breaks my heart that I let Healing force disintergrate. Someone stole my lyrics book in 1973 but at least we have GMs, The Gully and Poem of Joy, they were fabulous musicians and as I am still a performing Pro, I will always remember and be inspired by our time together, love you all, Lindsay

Thank you for this incredible gem of music and sharing a bit of your history!

Good to hear how things went down, but a god awful shame the band broke up. I can remember Healing Force playing back up on the Kinks tour in Brisbane. Healing Force stole the show! Absolutely amazing!

Lindsay, you really had the Cream Clapton look going on there - thought it was him for a minute!

That is if you're the guy on the SG!

Lindsay is your last name Field?

Golden miles and seasons of change by blackfeather were the two best songs in 1971 and that year had sooo many hits. They do not make good songs like that anymore.

I rate this as one of the very best songs ever recorded in Australia. The brilliant vocals and keyboards lift this track to a classic.
