Blue Guitar
Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Young girl feeling pretty old
Young girl in the band
Rolling into another town
Living the best they can

Across the street, a music store
She gotta find a brand new axe
And there he was, that blue guitar
He was staring her right back, staring her right back

She held him close and he felt just fine
He warmed her up, she know he was just right
Together they cut right through the night

She made herself a local scene
And man that axe could sing and scream
Crying for a big breakthrough
Only small time local news

Just about to pack it in
Mr. Money Biz rolled in
Paid the way and broke the band
A living one night stand, living one night stand

She held him close and he felt just fine
He warmed her up, she know he was just right
Together they cut right through the night

Like touching fire
Like holding desire
Like touching fire
Like holding desire

Take this platinum, take this gold
Burn too hot, it turns you cold
Nothin' left to hold on to
But that guitar was always true, that man was always true

She held him close and he felt just fine
He warmed her up, she know he was just right
Together they cut right through the night

Like touching fire
Like holding desire

Like touching fire
Like holding desire

Overall Meaning

The song Blue Guitar by Heart tells the story of a young woman who is part of a band traveling from town to town, trying to make it big. One day while in another town, she comes across a music store and sets her sights on a blue guitar. The guitar seems to speak to her and she holds it close, feeling warmed up by its presence. Together, she and the guitar form a powerful team as they cut right through the night with their music.

Despite the girl's talent, she only manages to make a name for herself in the local scene, and her big break remains elusive. Just when she seems ready to give up, a man named Mr. Money Biz rolls into town and offers to pay the band's way and break them into the business. The girl and her blue guitar are finally given a shot at fame and fortune, but as she rises to the top, she realizes that success can be fleeting and that nothing in life is guaranteed. Ultimately, it is her love for the blue guitar that remains true and steadfast.

The lyrics of Blue Guitar speak to the power of music to inspire, to heal, and to bring people together. They also serve as a reminder that true success comes not from fame or fortune, but from the love and passion we bring to our work, whatever that may be.

For many, 1981-1984 would be considered Heart's lean years, but this album proves otherwise. Passionworks and Private Audition were probably the least successful so far as charts and sales, but the fans know what's great. Haven't heard this for years, but I never forgot it. Been a fan for years, since childhood really, in the 70s. As a drummer, I love the sound Denny Carmassi got on this album, with all acoustic drums, especially the Roto-Toms! Met Howard Leese in '98, a real nice guy!

This also sounds like the 2009 remastered version. The original CD release was pretty brittle. I like this album, but Denny & Mark definitely had an influence over the change of the band's sound. Both are super solid & tight, but more straight-forward than Derosier & Fossen. I've always thought that the progression from this album to the self-titled made sense, but i do prefer the more guitar-driven element of this album vs. the addition of a lot of synthesizer on the self-titled. I never understood why the label/Rob Nevison decided, on Bad Animals, to strip away all of Heart's signature acoustic/electric blend and replace with an over abundance of keyboard. This was the last album where the band wrote the majority of the songs until 1993's Desire Walks On.
