Kick It Out
Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Out of the street, get on home
Tail shaking filly running on her own
They say she got loose on the night
She was born
Cranking it up in a school zone

"Kick it out, kick it out", she said
"kick out your motor and drive
While you're still alive, kick it out!"

Sitting in a bar in a seaside town
Sweet little love getting high getting down
Sailors see her running along the beach
Laugh and jump out of reach

Wild music blowing in her mane
She needs a bareback rider won't give her
No pain
A hard racy game of give and take
Leaves them dazed, half crazed, in her wake

"Kick it out, kick it out", she said

"kick out your motor and drive
While you're still alive, kick it out!"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Heart's "Kick It Out" tell the story of a wild, free-spirited woman who refuses to conform to society's expectations. She is described as a "tail shaking filly running on her own" who got loose on the night she was born, suggesting that she has always been rebellious and untamed. As the song progresses, we see her living on the edge and taking risks, such as cranking it up in a school zone and running along the beach while sailors laugh and jump out of reach. Her wild and carefree nature is highlighted by the wild music blowing in her mane and the hard racy game of give and take that leaves her partners dazed and half-crazed in her wake.

The chorus of the song, "Kick it out, kick it out, she said, kick out your motor and drive while you're still alive, kick it out!" can be interpreted as an urge to live life to the fullest and not let societal constraints hold you back. It is a call to rebel against the norm and embrace your wild and free side, just like the woman in the song.

Overall, "Kick It Out" is a celebration of individuality and living life on your own terms. It encourages listeners to embrace their inner rebel and kick out the motor that keeps them from truly living.

"Kick It Out'

Recorded in March 1977 @ Kaye Smith Studios in Seattle, Washington.
Released on the 'Little Queen' album .......... {Released > May 1977}

Fast-paced up-beat tempo. Reached #79 on the Billboard Charts in 1977.
A well received song at concerts. A real kick-ass song, that kicked up the
crowd at Concerts.

The Heart Insiders say >
This was a take off of "Ride The Tiger" from Jefferson Starship. Which was
released on their 'Dragon Fly' album from July 1974.

A similar beat, just stepped up one-pace faster. Both Roger Fisher and Howard
Lesse were 'the key' in dueling guitars here {1:49 thru 2:07}

Nancy played Piano for this song at the early concerts.

'Did you know > That 'Heart' toured and opened for 'Jefferson Starship' in 1976

One of the most underrated bands. One of the most underrated vocalists. One of the most underrated guitarists. One of the most underrated songwriters. 'nuff said. . . and shame on us music lovers.

Fantastic 1970's rock song. Loved it then, and it's only gotten better with time. Saw the Wilson sisters do this one on Letterman last night with the Foo Fighters. Ann has packed on a lot of weight, but her voice is as great as ever.

Elkanah Gray

Ann always had a weight problem...it was the re3cord company that forced her on a diet and slim down.  If it wasn't for her sister, she would of had a nervous breakdown because of the pressure of trying to stay slim.  At one point they told her that they could have sold more records if she wasn't so big!  Talent doesn't have anything to do with image...only in the music industry to they wrongfully shame!

...i got more speeding tickets to their music than any other band 😍

My neighbors do not like this song because I play it too loud, the
way this classic gem is meant to be played.
