The lyrics of Heart in Hand's song "Broken Promises" convey a deep sense of betrayal and pain experienced in a failed relationship. The singer expresses their frustration and disappointment with someone they once trusted and loved, highlighting their decision to no longer put their faith in this person. The opening line, "This is the last time I put my trust in you," sets the tone for the song, emphasizing the finality of their decision to move on.
The singer questions why the breakup hurts so much, as they recount feeling suffocated and manipulated by their partner. The lines, "Feels like your hands are around my neck, around my neck, lucky for me you have weak wrists," convey a sense of relief that the person who caused them pain is not strong enough to fully control or destroy them. Despite this, there is still a lingering emotional connection, as evidenced by the line, "And I hate the way my soul gave into your beautiful lies."
As the song progresses, the singer makes it clear that there is no trust or love left in the relationship, leading to a feeling of liberation. They express that by saying goodbye and ending the connection, they have nothing to lose. The repeated phrase, "There is no love, so I have nothing to lose," reinforces their decision to move on and break free from the toxic cycle they were trapped in.
In the end, the singer acknowledges that the person who hurt them is now reaching out for their help and support, but they refuse to be drawn back into the same destructive dynamic. They declare that this is the last time they will drop their guard, indicating a commitment to protecting themselves from further harm. The closing line, "This is the reason you're gone," suggests that the person responsible for the breakup ultimately brought it upon themselves through their actions.
Overall, "Broken Promises" explores the themes of trust, betrayal, and self-preservation in the aftermath of a toxic relationship. The song captures the conflicting emotions of hurt, anger, and liberation experienced by someone who has been let down by someone they once cared for deeply.
