Despite his personal struggles, he rose up during the 70's, the heyday of Salsa. He performed in sold out nightclubs, stadiums, and in some of the most prestigious concert halls. His recordings garnered him many awards and gold albums. His musical success is attributed to his extraordinary lyrical improvisations. His unique salsa flavor has remained without rival. Sadly, due to his losing battle with addiction to heroin, it played havoc with his career. There was a suicide attempt and ultimately he died from AIDS.
"El Cantante" (The Singer), a biopic based on Hector Lavoe's life, was releaded in 2006. Jennifer Lopez, who produced the film, also plays the role of one of his wives Puchi, while Marc Anthony portrays the ill-fated lead role.

@Jimmy The Gent Conway si señor, la compuso Fredy Molina y la interpretó Alfredo Gutiérrez, para ese entonces en la Ciudad Barranquilla Héctor Lavoe tubo una presentación y en lugar cercano estaba sonando está melodía, le gustó y le dijo a su arreglista que la adecuará para su estilo, conservando la esencia de la original.

En realidad es un argumento sin sentido. Son dos estilo de música totalmente distinto pero con la misma letra. Tu puedes componer una buena letra y la puedes interpretar declamando, o cantar en cualquier estilo de música. No hay limites. Es posible que el autor de esta letra era conocido de Héctor y en un acuerdo la grabo, como también lo hicieron con el vallenato. Eso no quiere decir que Héctor se ensucia la boca cantando vallenato. En todo caso el comentario sería, una joya de letra interpretada por Héctor al estilo salsa. Y por cierto el vallenato ha mejorado, es mas comercial, tiene muchos seguidores. Pero sigue siendo feo. 😂
