Jamie
Hedge & Donna Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mama I see you smiling
And it's
Plain to me and Jamie
That your
Life has brought you places
Where your
Mind can make you happy
Where your
Thoughts don't drive you crazy
They just
Flow on free and easy
And I know, oh-oh oh-oh oh-oh oh-oh-oh

Papa I bought some licorice
'cuz I
Know how much it pleases
And I
Ran all the way from downtown
And I
Only ate three pieces
And I
Love to hear your laughter
'cuz it
Comes from deep within you
And I know, oh-oh oh-oh oh-oh oh-oh-oh

I know that
We've got to meet on the mountain
We've got to meet on the mountain
We've got to meet on the mountain
'cuz I love the long and lost mountain
And I love the sea
And I do believe you are me
Yes I do believe you are me
Whoever you may be

Mama I see you smiling
And it's
Plain to me and Jamie
That your
Life has brought you places
Where your
Mind can make you happy
Where your
Thoughts don't drive you crazy
They just

Flow on free and easy
And I know, oh-oh oh-oh oh-oh oh-oh-oh

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Hedge & Donna's song Jamie appears to be a conversation between a child named Jamie and their mother. The child is happy to see their mother smiling and notices that she has reached a point in her life where she can find happiness and peace of mind. It's interesting to note that the child seems to have a level of awareness and understanding about their mother's life and emotional state, despite being quite young. The child also acknowledges the importance of mental wellbeing, suggesting that it's not just physical health that matters but also the state of one's mind. The verse ends with the child acknowledging their insight into their mother's state of mind, conveying a sense of harmony between the two.

In the second verse, the focus shifts to the child's father. The child has bought some licorice for their father as they know it is something that pleases him. The child is happy to hear their father's laughter, which seems to come from a deep and genuine place within him. It's interesting to note the child's desire to contribute to their parents' happiness by buying something small that they know will bring joy. The child also notes that they have to "meet on the mountain," implying that there is a sense of adventure and joy associated with spending time outdoors and exploring nature. At the same time, the child believes that they and their parents share a deep connection and are essentially the same, regardless of their differences.

Overall, the song seems to revolve around the themes of family, connection, and happiness. The child appears to be part of a loving and harmonious family unit, where each member is attuned to the emotions and needs of others. There is a sense of unity and togetherness that emerges from the lyrics, and a certain degree of optimism and hopefulness about life.

Rest peace to my aunt Donna

I have been searching for this song for years. Way back in the late seventies, a bunch of us used to get together and play music. "Buzzard", a troubled Vietnam vet would play this. I wrote it down , but lost it in the years since. We also loved Frazier and DeBolt, another obscure fold duo. Thank you!

I spoke with Donna yesterday evening, we live at the same Senior Retirement Community in Chula Vista, CA. I told her of all the wonderful comments people have been posting and she was, in her words, "blown away" that H&D were remembered at all. I told her there was a clamor for a reunion tour, sadly that won't be happening. She and Hedge divorced just before their last album, the Capers and Carson album. Hedge inherited some high class property in La Jolla, CA and is living with, I believe, his 5th wife. Donna talks all the time about her time in Hedge and Donna with wistful memories, still not believing how blessed they were to live that experience, meeting some of the greatest folk singers and musicians of that era. She also said if anyone wanted to come and visit she would love it. I don't know the YouTube policy on this, but figure this out: One seven one fourth avenue Chula Vista, CA 91910. If you even just wrote her a letter it would make her day. If you listen to her singing, the lower parts sound just as she does today, don't know if she can hit the high notes any more but she is so much fun to talk with.
