Following the release of their seventh studio album Cageless (2017) and its accompanying tour, current members of Hedley faced accusations of sexual misconduct with young women over the course of their career. After Hoggard faced additional accusations of sexual assault by two women, the group confirmed they would enter an indefinite hiatus.
On July 23, 2018, Hoggard was charged with one count of Sexual Interference and two counts of Sexual Assault Causing Bodily Harm. On June 5, 2022, Hoggard was convicted of sexually assaulting the Ottawa woman.
On November 8, 2018, former drummer of the band Chris Crippin spoke out against Hoggard's behaviour during his time with the band. Crippin stated he was routinely called a "f*ggot" and was told to "shut the fuck up" when he tried to speak out. In a separate interview in July 2019, Crippin said that Hoggard was "extremely rude" and it wasn't behaviour he wanted to be around.
On October 20, 2022, Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard was sentenced to 5 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting an Ottawa woman.

I can be so cynical, no more
Life can seem too typical, too digital
Lord I don't wanna be so invisible
Staying alive, hey, whatever it takes
Whenever it feels alright
Staying alive, oh, wherever I go
Staying alive, hey, whatever it takes
Whenever it feels alright
Staying alive, oh, wherever I go
Like it's do or die
Like you just can't wait
Like a big blue sky on a summer day
Take me up so high where I wanna stay
Staying alive
Hey, whatever it takes
Whenever it feels alright
Like a first romance on an ocean wave
It's your very last chance
It's a leap of faith
Take me up so high when I wanna stay
Staying alive
Oh, wherever I go
Whatever I do tonight, oh
Love is sound and the visuals
Love a crowd of originals
Oh no, I love it now
Physical, so physical
Lord I don't wanna be so invisible
Staying alive, hey, whatever it takes
Whenever it feels alright
Staying alive, oh, wherever I go
Whatever I do tonight
Staying alive, hey, whatever it takes
Whenever it feels alright
Staying alive, oh, wherever I go
Like it's do or die
Like you just can't wait
Like a big blue sky on a summer day
Take me up so high where I wanna stay
Staying alive, hey, whatever it takes
Whenever it feels alright
Like a first romance on an ocean wave
It's your very last chance
It's a leap of faith
Take me up so high when I wanna stay
Staying alive, oh, wherever I go
Whatever I do tonight, oh
I, I don't wanna be so invisible
Mmm yeah I don't wanna be so invisible
Like it's do or die
Like you just can't wait
Like a big blue sky on a summer day
Take me up so high where I wanna stay
Staying alive, hey, whatever it takes
Whenever it feels alright
Like a first romance on an ocean wave
It's your very last chance
It's a leap of faith
Take me up so high when I wanna stay
Staying alive, oh, wherever I go
Whatever I do tonight, oh
Whatever I do tonight
Whatever I do tonight
The song "Alive" by Hedley is about the importance of feeling like you belong and being present in your own life. The first verse talks about feeling like a miracle, but also being cynical and invisible. The singer doesn't want to live their life feeling like it's too typical or digital. They want to feel alive and visible. The chorus emphasizes the importance of staying alive, no matter what it takes or where they go. The verses then go on to talk about love being physical and not wanting to be invisible again.
The repetition of the phrase "staying alive" in the chorus is significant because it shows that the singer is actively trying to maintain their happiness and sense of belonging. It's almost as if they are reminding themselves to stay present and engaged in their own life. The verses build upon this idea by emphasizing the importance of physical presence and human connection. The lyrics are both uplifting and melancholic, as the singer is reflecting on the past but also trying to stay positive about the future.
The bridge of the song talks about taking a leap of faith and wanting to feel like you're flying, which could be interpreted as a metaphor for taking risks in life and living in the moment. The song ends with the repetition of "whatever I do tonight," emphasizing the fleeting nature of life and the importance of living in the present.
Overall, "Alive" is a song about the struggle to feel alive and present in your own life. It's a reminder to take risks, stay positive, and appreciate the moments that make life worth living.
