Following the release of their seventh studio album Cageless (2017) and its accompanying tour, current members of Hedley faced accusations of sexual misconduct with young women over the course of their career. After Hoggard faced additional accusations of sexual assault by two women, the group confirmed they would enter an indefinite hiatus.
On July 23, 2018, Hoggard was charged with one count of Sexual Interference and two counts of Sexual Assault Causing Bodily Harm. On June 5, 2022, Hoggard was convicted of sexually assaulting the Ottawa woman.
On November 8, 2018, former drummer of the band Chris Crippin spoke out against Hoggard's behaviour during his time with the band. Crippin stated he was routinely called a "f*ggot" and was told to "shut the fuck up" when he tried to speak out. In a separate interview in July 2019, Crippin said that Hoggard was "extremely rude" and it wasn't behaviour he wanted to be around.
On October 20, 2022, Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard was sentenced to 5 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting an Ottawa woman.

When you're chasing your dreams
And it's not what it seems
And your heart is on the line
And now we want to be the one fade in
Am I out of my mind?
Do I got it all wrong
But I try to make it right
I've never wanted to be the one waiting
She said Jake you're a little bit stoned
When you gonna get grown
Would you just go home
I'm so not sure
Could you help yourself
I can't help you anymore
You're going faster than me
Too little too late
I don't think I'm gonna stay
I don't think you gonna change
I'm so not sure
Could you help yourself
I can't help you anymore
You're going faster than me
But I can't slow down now
The light just went down, down
There's a cost, there's a price
Yeah you're really feel the fall out
Ripping your heart out
Night after night
When all you ever wanted was some home time
I'm not thinking sober
I don't think it's over
I can't lie
But I can use a little bit of lone time
She said Jake you're a little bit stoned
When you gonna get grown
Would you just go home
I'm so not sure
Could you help yourself
I can't help you anymore
You're going faster than me
Too little too late
I don't think I'm gonna stay
I don't think you gonna change
I'm so not sure
Could you help yourself
I can't help you anymore
You're going faster than me
But I can't slow down now
The light just went down, down
Baby hold on somehow
'Cause I can't slow down now
No I can't slow down now
I'm not thinking sober
I don't think it's over
I can't lie
I could use a little bit of home time
She said Jake you're a little bit stoned
When you gonna get grown
Would you just go home
I'm so not sure
Could you help yourself
I can't help you anymore
You're going faster than me
Too little too late
I don't think I'm gonna stay
I don't think you gonna change
I'm so not sure
Could you help yourself
I can't help you anymore

No I can't slow down now
The lyrics of "Can" by Hedley follow the story of someone chasing their dreams at the cost of their personal relationships and wellbeing. The song highlights how the pursuit of one's desires can lead to deviation from reality and the struggle to hold on to what truly matters, including loved ones and oneself. The chorus emphasizes how the character, Jake, is in too deep to turn back now despite the negative consequences of his actions. The repeated line "I'm not thinking sober," reflects how Jake is lost in his aspirations without considering the true impact on himself and those around him.
The song portrays a struggle between personal growth and maintaining relationships. As Jake is asked to "get grown," he questions whether he is on the right path for his personal growth, and the idea that he may need to slow down to avoid negatively impacting his loved ones. However, he is unable to do so because he is too invested in chasing his dreams no matter the negative consequences. The line "Too little too late" suggests that he may have realized his mistakes but it may be too late to change them. The song ends with the realization that he needs to take some time to reflect and to focus on himself, but it remains uncertain whether he will really change his ways.
In summary, "Can" is a thought-provoking melody about a character caught between the pursuit of his dreams and the cost of his personal relationships. The song reflects on the cost of following personal desires obsessively and how one can be blind-sided by their aspiration, forgetting what is crucial in the present.
